I understand why a billionaire would buy control of the government for their own personal gain. I understand why a person seeking to maintain power would only hire people who pledge fealty.

I don't understand why non-billionaires support them in doing so.

A person with a home worth a couple million dollars is not in the same conversation as a billionaire. These are overwhelmingly people who still work for a living. They don't have millions in the bank. All they have is the house.
