Often I search for shapes. I start with the lightgreen here for contrast. The red line shows I wasn't happy with the curve the high parts made visually, so I modified it, then previewed in dark colours.

With this tree I'm calling the "Grand Willow", I started with a full brown silhouette for the trunk, blocked out where each root would go, then shaded one by one. Leaves aren't finished
