Day 7
Movie: A sweet, gentle romantic comedy about finding love when no one understands you. Great music, too.
Vampire: Literally me as a vampire! I also love how her family comes together to support her (eventually) even though she lives outside their norms.

And on a more depressing note, I wonder how much that horse girl energy was influenced by Tolkien's WWI experience. He probably had to see so many horses just discarded on the battlefield, maybe without even getting names...πŸ˜₯

One of my favourite parts of Return of the King is when we find out that Bill's okay. Because I was legit worried up until that point.

Day 6
Episode 1: Fascinating changes to put the story in a modern context. Unsure how I feel about the interview itself, but Louis is already 10Γ— more sympathetic than the OG (or Emo Brad Pitt).
Vampire: Lestat is properly predatory, but, I worry, too clever. Time will tell.

Day 5
Movie: Surprisingly close to the nastiness of the book, but doesn't quite capture the depth of its nihilism. And it's a tad less gay, while retaining plenty of camp.
Vampire(s): Brad Pitt is a boring mope. Kirsten Dunst is a prodigy. Tom Cruise is just being his best self.

Phobos - The Doctor scares a fear god to death! A fun, fast-paced adventure, like the rest of this series so far. The shorter format only allows for fairly simple stories, but they've all got great pacing.

Day 4 (delayed by travel)
Movie: Timeless. Some of the most beautiful uses of shadow and light I've ever seen. Will have to re-watch when I'm less jet-lagged.
Vampire: Obviously, the most classic type. I love how independent he is--no need for familiars when you can tote your own coffin!

Day 3 (delayed by travel)
Movie: A sweet romance between two outcast teens slowly devolves into a bloody Gothic tragedy. I loved the atmosphere, but wanted a bit more substance.
Vampire: Another case of not-technically-a-vamp (probably), but he sure can dress like one!

Day 2:
Movie - Much better than the memes led me to believe. A bizarre, but shockingly smart, black comedy about how patriarchal power dynamics warp reality.
Vampire - In some ways he's not really a vampire, but in other ways, he's the realest vampire of all, ya know?

I've decided this year's Spooky Season is going to be all about vampires.

#1 - Movie: A moody, beautiful, bloody fable about the perils of puberty.
Vampire: Classic lore (except she doesn't seem to need vampiric baptism to turn people), definitely a monster, ambiguous in multiple ways.

Starting off spooky season by visiting a spooky place!
(Actually a very beautiful and reverential place, but, ya know--skeletons.)

Related: did you know that binging early Supernatural is the best way to dissociate on a 12-hour flight? It's recommended by doctors or something.

Out of all the "before they were famous" actor cameos on genre TV, Sterling K. Brown on Supernatural is one of the most interesting to revisit. Even in 2006, he seemed like an Oscar-nominated actor who somehow wandered onto a CW set.

Immortal Beloved - Eight & Lucie land on a planet where some geezers are cloning themselves to live forever. Way too much exposition for such a simple concept. Paul McGann gushing about his son's acting debut on the CD extras is cute, though.
