eg, separating 40 "red" water molecules from 40 "blue" water molecules has an entropic/free energy cost, but putting all of those molecules alone, surrounded by vacuum would be entropically much more expensive.

@onychomys.bsky.social Have you thought about why life likes to live in liquid water? eg, why can't we have cells or bacteria that are just "filled with" and surrounded by "air" instead of water molecules?

I think there might be an entropy/free energy argument.

A fight between "perfect" and "good enough" I guess?

So, I'll guess that the two colors of dye, mixed together, have a lower freezing point. Not sure how this would happen - probably some sort of interaction energy benefit, eg the energy of red+blue mixing is lower than the entropic/free-energy benefit of the colors being uniformly mixed?

Looks like how you make Applejack out of Hard apple cider. ethanol, methanol, and fusel oils have much lower freezing point, so if you freeze hard cider, in the morning you get a ball of liquor in the middle and very pure ice on the outside of the shell.

Different field but I joined a union without much thought when I started with my current employer. I now feel sympathy for peers with non-union offices. Their situation seem so much more tenuous, fraut, and full of disrespect than my professional life has been.

I'm not trying to be cute, isn't this what a general education program is for? Everybody should take a little science. A little math, a little writing, a little social science, etc.

It's good that the president thinks it's a good idea to visit the picket line, doesn't matter how cynical a calculation it is, because no president in living memory has thought the same

I wondered today about a farmland value crash when cars tip over to mostly electric and the ethanol mandate becomes meaningless. 2040?
