A Time for Fresh Energy and New Beginnings Even more than January 1st, September feels like the beginning of the new year for many of us. Summer breaks and vacations are over, and the school year begins along with the church program year. Our brothers and sisters in the Orthodox tradition celebrate the beginning of their church year on September 1st, when they hear again the story of God creating the world and everything in it. For our Jewish neighbors, the Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah, also usually falls in September. Along with cooler temperatures and shorter days, the fall season seems to bring fresh energy and new beginnings. September 1st is also the beginning of the Season of Creation, when Christians from different denominations and all around the world join together in an ecumenical celebration of God’s good gift of creation and a re-commitment to caring for our common home. This year’s theme is Peace with Creation, and we are all invited to work for God’s shalom for all the world. In Hebrew the word shalom means far more than the absence of war or conflict. Shalom means the restoration of all broken relationships, including our relationship with God, ourselves, the human family, and the rest of Creation. True peace comes when we live in right relationship with God, each other, and the world God loves. The Season of Creation extends through October 4th, which is also the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. In addition to Blessing the Animals, Sunday, October 5th is also World Communion Sunday, when Christians all around the world celebrate their unity in Christ as they gather around the Lord’s Table and are fed with the bread and cup, the love and grace of God. Over the next month, we are invited to celebrate the beauty of the world around us and to recommit ourselves to the work of peacemaking, not just with our human neighbors, but with all creation so that all may enjoy God’s abundant life. Here in the Hudson Valley, we live in a particularly beautiful corner of God’s creation. As we enjoy the beauty of the changing seasons and this harvest time, may we also become more mindful of the many opportunities we have to make peace with creation – to use the Earth’s resources wisely and carefully and to share the Earth’s gifts so that everyone and everything has what they need not only to survive, but to thrive as God intends. ~Tami & Chip

News from the Operations Commission Summer Project Recap The Operations Commission has had a busy summer keeping up with the demands of our campus with the work falling into two broad categories, tasks which we tackled and accomplished ourselves and tasks completed by external contractors. In the former category, our dedicated team of Dick, Jerry, and Bud have tended to and weeded the several gardens which border our buildings as well as the bed by the 129/202 intersection and the Agape Garden, trimmed bushes, re-chocked the parking areas, placed boulders to re-frame the Butterfly Garden, scraped, sanded and painted various areas of the Sanctuary and the list goes on and on. In the latter category, the decrepit fence which bordered the main driveway has been replaced by a new vinyl fence with a cross-hatched top border. In front of the Sanctuary you will notice that all flagstones have been leveled and all seams have been chipped out and replaced with new concrete. Additionally, the handicapped ramp has been excavated and smoothed out. Soon we will be scheduling a tent takedown afternoon and a fall cleanup morning both of which will call for any willing volunteers. Please consider joining us for these as well as our regularly scheduled and unscheduled activities.

Creative Fellowship Opportunities Our Creative Fellowship Groups are always busy. Learn more about what they do and consider joining in their generous efforts! Knit Togethers next meetings are on Monday at 10:00 am in the Church Library on September 8 & 22 and on October 27. We continue to knit baby blankets, lap blankets, hats, and scarfs for children and adults to give to community groups. All knitters are welcome to join us as we knit for others in the community. Yarn is available. For information call Norean Radke 914-962-4370. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is led by Marianna Sherman. Prayer Shawls are given to church members and friends from suggestions by our pastors and others. The Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 1998 in North Carolina by two women who began knitting/crocheting shawls to give to breast cancer patients and new mothers. From that simple beginning, this ministry has expanded across the country and the globe. In 2006, Marianna Sherman began this ministry in our church. Presently there are six knitters in the group. Prayer shawls are given for a variety of reasons. For example, recipients of the prayer shawls can include those who are ill, in the hospital, experienced a death in the family, baptisms, or a joy or accomplishment. The group also knits hats and scarves for our Food Pantry clients for Christmas. The shawls are a reminder of the support and comfort which is wished for all. The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month in the church library. Our next dates are: September 10 and 24 and October 8 and 22. Additional Knitters and Crocheters needed! Sweet Dreams: Sweet Dreams is a ministry of our church that makes baby quilts for infant baptisms. Sweet Dreams quilters meet on the third Sunday of the month at noon. Our next meetings will be on September 21 and October 19. If you have questions or want to join us in that effort please contact Margaret Harrison (Harrison3505@gmail.com).

Transformational Mission From the Mission Commission Are you looking for opportunities to help our neighbors? Rooted in a commitment to active partnership and advocacy, the FPCY Mission Commission provides several ways to address hunger in our community and beyond, and to broaden our understanding of our neighbors who suffer from food insecurity. Through the FPCY Pantry, the monthly Jan Peek Meal, Noontime Meal, Garden of Hope, Advocacy Letter writing and Mission Trips, you can select an option that works with your schedule. Some of these are outlined below, but you can always check out the Mission Commission’s new bulletin board on the corner of the hall that separates Fellowship Hall from the Gathering Space. If you are interested in guiding our Mission activities, please talk to our co-chairs Lynn Edling or Jeff Kephart to learn more about what we do. Whether or not you join us formally, you are welcome to attend our monthly meetings, which take place at 7:30pm on the third Tuesday of each month in the church library. Please join us in making a difference! ~Jeff Kephart and Lynn Edling, Co-chairs, FPCY Mission Commission The Noontime Meal program is run by the Salvation Army in Peekskill to provide a warm meal every workday afternoon for people in need (~120 people). FPCY is responsible for the second Wednesday of each month. Each month one person orders food from the ShopRite in Cortlandt, picks it up, and delivers it to Salvation Army headquarters in Peekskill. The whole process takes ~1 hour but makes a big impact! Contact Jeff Kephart. Jan Peek House is a shelter in Peekskill, NY, that provides food, shelter, and support for a few dozen men and women experiencing homelessness. Every 4th Saturday of the month, 3 or more families prepare dinner for 35-40 residents. If you are interested and available, please either sign up on Signup Genius or contact Jeff Kephart. Garden of Hope Harvest season is here again! It has been a great year! Green beans, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, parsley, basil, radish, chard have all been distributed to the local food pantries, including St. Mary’s in Mohegan Lake, Fred’s in Peekskill and our own FPCY pantry. We can always use volunteers. The main need is with harvesting on Thursday after 3pm or working on other projects on Saturday 10-2, when Janet, the master-gardener can direct. The Garden of Hope is located at Willow Park off of Curry St in Yorktown. Especially on the 2nd and 4th weeks when the harvest is going to our pantry it is nice to have an FPCY presence. We can also use help with packaging and preparing the harvest for the food pantry distribution on Friday. Any volunteer is welcome to contact Dawna Dennis on Realm or via text (206-947-7173) if you need direction or want to arrange a time to work.

Music at FPCY This summer, seven of us traveled to Montreat, North Carolina, for the Presbyterian Association of Musicians’ Worship and Music Conference. For me, it was less about doing music and more about rediscovering why we make music in the first place. Montreat is surrounded by mountains and streams, and creation seems to sing on its own there. In my classes, I was reminded that creation isn’t just what we see in nature—it’s also the friendships we form, the music we share, and the faith that binds us together. I hiked the trails, yes, but I also found creation alive in conversations, in laughter, and in the rhythm of a drum circle. One of the most moving moments came during a hymn sing led by Ana Hernández. With simple rounds, hymns, and chants, she drew us into something beautiful—not flashy, not grand, but authentic. It was a powerful reminder that creation often speaks in the small and simple things. And here’s the surprising part: I wasn’t in a single performing ensemble all week. At a music conference, you’d expect rehearsals, concerts, and over-packed schedules. Instead, I found freedom in simply listening, watching friends create art, and joining my voice to a hymn sung with joy. It was breathtaking to discover that musical creation doesn’t have to mean performance. Sometimes, it’s a conversation, a class discussion, or even just singing a hymn loudly enough to make it yours. My biggest takeaway is this: creation is happening all around us, in ways we might overlook when we’re busy making music perfect. It isn’t about anxious noise, it’s about joyful noise. Montreat gave me space to remember why I love this work in the first place: because music, in all its forms, points us back to Creation. ~Garrett Our flagship groups are starting back up again on Thursday, September 11th. Create music with Us! * FPCY Bell Choir: Thursdays 6:45-7:50pm * FPCY Choir: Thursdays 8:00-9:30pm * FPCY Music Ensemble will begin rehearsals on Sunday September 21 after the second service

Blessing of the Animals October 5 at 2pm On Sunday afternoon, October 5th at 2:00 pm, The First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown will offer a Blessing of the Pets. The blessing of animals reminds us to celebrate creation, and God’s message that we shall be faithful stewards of the earth. Members of the community are invited to bring their pets and gather in the back parking lot at 2:00 pm for the ceremony and individual blessings led by Pastors Chip Low and Tami Seidel. Families may wish to bring a picture of a pet that is too sick to come, who may be temperamentally unable to attend the ceremony, or who has died in recent years and for whom the family is thankful.

Opportunities to Learn and Grow in Faith at FPCY! (All Bible studies and discussion groups are hybrid, both in person and online!) Parables with Josh Scott Sunday Mornings @ 9:15 am (starting 9/14) or Thursday Mornings @ 10:30 am (starting 9/18) We’ll be learning more about Jesus’s parables in our study with Josh Scott, pastor of GracePointe church in Nashville. We’ll meet for six weeks starting on Sunday, September 14th at 9:15 AM, and Thursday, September 18th at 10:30 AM, both in the library and on Zoom, to watch a short video and discuss a parable. Watch a preview. The six parables we’ll be studying include the parable about old wine in new wineskins, the wicked tenants, and the workers in the vineyard. With Scott’s guidance, we’ll look at each of these parables as they are written in each of the gospels, examining the different “voices” and contexts. Optional participant guides will be available for a suggested donation of $13. The Tears of Things Sunday Evenings @ 7:00 pm (starting 9/28) Many of us are feeling anxious, angry and unsettled by the world around us, and we are seeking fresh wisdom and perspective “for the living of these days.” In his book The Tears of Things: Prophetic Wisdom for an Age of Outrage, beloved author and priest Father Richard Rohr finds such wisdom and perspective in an ancient place, in the lives and words of the Old Testament prophets who offer an alternative “path of enlightenment for anyone seeking a compassionate way of living in a hurting world.” Books are available in the Office for a suggested donation of $25. How We Learn to Be Brave Tuesday Mornings @ 10:00 am (starting 9/16) With so much going on in our lives and our world, how can we respond with “grit and grace,” pushing past our fears and anxieties and acting with strength and trust? As we will learn in Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde’s book How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith, “Being brave is not a singular occurrence; it’s a journey that we can choose to undertake every day.” Join as we read and discuss this inspiring book and live into God’s call to “be bold and courageous” in our everyday lives. Books are available in the Office for a suggested donation of $11. 1st Wednesday of the Month @ 10:30 am Women’s Circle Bible Study Finding Resilience, Joy and Identity in Jesus Christ Each year Presbyterian Women/Horizons releases a Bible study curriculum that we use for our Women’s Circle. Led by Tami, this group meets once a month in the library and on Zoom, from 10:30 AM until noon. The 2025-2026 study is entitled Finding Resilience, Joy, and Our Identity in Jesus Christ. From the introduction: “In this Bible study, we will explore resilience. This is modeled for us by several biblical characters, gospel and epistle writers, as well as Jesus. The Bible study is also about joy. How do we find joy in a chaotic world? Christian joy may be different from how a lot of people define joy. We will also seek to rediscover our identity.” The books are available for a suggested donation of $14.   Disciple Bible Study – Remember Who You Are Wednesday Afternoons @ 2:00 pm and Evenings @ 7:30 pm (starting 9/17) We live in a world with many voices, distractions and forces attempting to define us and limit us, and our challenge is to remain true to our core identity as children of God and followers of Jesus Christ. Our Disciple Bible Study this year will immerse us in the writing of the Old Testament prophets (12 weeks) and the letters of Paul (12 weeks), as they seek to better understand and call God’s people back to our true faith and identity in God. This study meets weekly and involves daily Bible reading and reflection. The Prophets workbook is available in the Office for a suggested donation of $18.

Item of the Month for September: Gluten Free and Vegan Food For September we are requesting something a little different, for a number of our clients who require food that is very difficult for us to source from our usual outlets: Gluten-free and vegan food. At each pantry we typically only have a few of these items to offer to our clients. We know which clients are looking for these items, and try to have something on hand to offer them, but cannot always satisfy them. (Of course many items are naturally gluten-free and vegan; we are looking for “substitute” items to fill gaps in a client’s pantry.) Any specifically gluten-free items are appreciated: baking flour, muffin mix, pasta, etc. Vegan items can include hearty soups such as lentil and bean, or hearty stews, as long as they are vegan. Of course all non-perishable items are always welcome. If you would like to make a food donation, please note: * Non-Perishable FOOD Only * NO Food with expired dates on the packages. * Donate the quality of food you would serve to your own family. * Online contributions to the Food Pantry are also most welcome. You can find more information, including our distribution schedule on our Food Pantry Page.

Women’s Circle: Finding Resilience, Joy and Our Identity in Jesus Christ Each year Presbyterian Women/Horizons releases a Bible study curriculum. We use that curriculum for our Women’s Circle. This group meets in the library and on Zoom the first Wednesday of every month, from 10:30 AM until noon. Tami leads the discussions. We’ll meet on September 3, in the library and on Zoom, to start the year off. We will also seek to rediscover our identity.” The books have been ordered and will be available for a suggested donation of $14. All are welcome! Come and bring a friend. See you in September.
