This is the poem that got me through to the 2nd round of my last slam. Possibly the only time you'll hear me reciting verse that rhymes

Trout. Trout.
Get them all out!
These are the fish
We can do without
And I am also dubious about Trout Mask Replica, although I haven't had the mandatory 6 listens after which you're supposed to "get it". I'm glad something that completely outre & bizarre exists though.
Although this is always at the back of my head since I learned it bsky.app/profile/matt...
Weirdly I already know Beefheart. I just never took the step into Zappa. Although I guess for many people the journey is the other way around.

I probably ought to after this because despite the naysayers honestly Gumbo Variations is proving pretty fucking incredible too.
I do have to go listen to some Echo and the Bunneymen first tho as I'm seeing them live next weekend, but I'll bookmark your suggestions.
People go on about Shadowrun but for my money 40k is the best fantasy/sci-fi fusion we've had
06.03.2026 10:08 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Pretty much everything about it is pitch perfect and I also noticed the ratchet. I've never heard Zappa before but this whole album so far is blowing my mind. Got the Gumbo Variations coming up next tho which I understand is a bit of a slog.

06.03.2026 09:58 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Much as I enjoyed this, I am secretly furious that they included two albums by Fairpoint Convention on the list and absolutely none by Steeleye Span π‘
06.03.2026 09:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0#69 is Unhalfbricking by Fairport Convention. Mostly new to me. A great slice of folk-rock, with nice little flourishes of jazz, even if a couple of the tunes are a bit corny or wishy-washy. A Sailor's Life is absolutely fantastic. 4/5 1001albumsgenerator.com/albums/7isYi...

Book Group The last Thursday of every month was Book Group,β¨when the books would gather together to discuss Brian. βItβs no fun here any more,β remarked Bleak House, glumly.β¨βWhy doesnβt he read us?β whined the Grapes of Wrath. βIt makes me so angry!β β¨βIβm sure he only bought me so he can show me off to his friends,ββ¨complained Ulysses, in a stream of self-consciousness. βI bet he canβt even remember my name, The Idiot,ββ¨muttered a voice from the Russian literature section.β¨βThatβs because he avoids you like The Plague,β said another.β¨βCβest vrai!β came a cry. βIt is like I do not exist.β βLetβs not give up on him yet.β It was Brave New World.β¨After some Persuasion, they agreed to give him one last chance.β¨βBe quiet!β cried Waiting for Godot with Great Expectations.β¨βHere he comes now!β Brian entered the room, with his phone.β¨He sat down and watched some videos of baby pandas falling over.β¨After an hour or so, he started googling cats dressed as celebrities. On the shelf, the books waited with uncracked spines,β¨their silence speaking volumes. Brian Bilston
