I have been a big fan of their work, and Vlaada is one of greatest designers of all time - making this all the more painful.

38. Body Horror is the most disturbing form of horror bc we've all had enough pain, fear & suffering in our lives to relate to the extremes we see on screen, but bodily transformation in real time is unimaginable and therefore scarier.

37. Horror music - by which I mean music that's actively disturbing, not Halloween party nonsense - isn't talked about enough bc when it's done well, it's too freaky to listen to. Late Scott Walker is the most consistent example.

36. I've long been of the opinion that the very best art has a surface that can be enjoyed without effort as well as deeper layers that it invites you to investigate & consider. This is both more true of horror than any other genre & the genre is superb at delivering it

35. Genre semantics is boring but IMO there are a huge number of films given the "horror" tag that are nothing of the sort, the most recent and feted example of which is Sinners.

Martin should definitely be on that list.

A list of people who want to be vampires?

34. Partly bc it allows so much room for fantasy & creativity horror is very fertile ground for metaphor & many cheap n cheery horror productions are open multiple readings. This might be better known amongst critics if there wasn't such genre snobbery around

33. There's a really difficult tension in vampire stories between wanting the vampire to be this terrifying bogeyman and also wanting to *be* the vampire, the two are pretty much irreconcilable and vampire movies are better when they pick a side rather than trying to do both.

32. Horror films are about the only remaining genre of films that are reliably ~90 minutes and that's excellent and a huge relief from the runtime bloat that plagues a lot of modern film-making.

Someone made a cluster graph of scoring relationships on BGG and I'm fascinated by the fact that Rory's Story Cubes has so little correlation to anything else that in a dataset of tens of thousands, it forms a group by itself

31. It's very easy to confuse horror for raw, gross-out, shock value and indeed a lot of cheap/grindhouse movies do, but not only are the best horror movies often light on the really grotesque stuff, I'd go so far as to say they're almost completely different things.

30. The worst horror film I've seen since I started keeping records implied - unintentionally, I hope - that its mentally ill protagonist was better off dead for the sake of their family. Given the negative themes evoked by many horror movies, it's astonshingly easy to do something like this. Don't.

29. It's become fashionable to hate on M. Night Shyamalan bc his films do ride so heavily on plot twists, but can we all just take a moment to remember just how revolutionary and shocking The Sixth Sense and Signs felt when they first came out?

28. Good horror benefits from a degree of ambiguity but there's a regrettable number of writers and film-makers who either lean into this too hard and allow their work to devolve into a confusing mish-mash of nonsense, or too little and create bland, over-expositioned drivel.

27. I used to think that the Hammer Horror films I watched as a teen were just good fun until I tried some of them with my own kids. They're just tiresome, hokey nonsense nowadays. There are a few notable exceptions: The Devil Rides Out, Curse of Frankenstein, but even they're mediocre at best.

Yeah I mean it's no wonder they left it out of the film but you can just imagine some sicko director wanting to keep parts of it. And if you come to the book after the movie, as I did, you are entirely unprepared. It's just a totally different tone of "horror"

... who has been driven mad by the pain is is now more animal than human, sporting a permanent erection amidst his ruined body, who hunts Eli down and attempt to rape him (Eli is unambiguosly a castrated boy in the book). It's just -awful- and made me wonder about the authors state of mind TBH.

In the book, Eli's guardian, Hakan, is a pedophile who hunts for blood in the hope of getting sex. His "inner life" is dwelt on matter-of-factly in several scenes and that's bad enough. But in the book, when Hakan dies, he comes back to life as a horrifically burnt, mangled vampire ...

26. The movie adaptations of Let the Right One In are deservedly praised for their atmospherics but the original novel is one of the most repulsive, nauseating horrors I've ever read. I'm glad the adaptations left most of that out.

Read the hardback of this and it's a delight, readable yet knowledgable and full of insight. Tim is certainly the best long-form writer covering boardgames today.

Thanks for the clarification. The thing I read also included Biden in the number who were unwilling to interfere in the makeup of the supreme court.
