Fannie Lou Hamer’s Medal of Freedom Now Displayed at Mississippi Civil Rights Museum Fannie Lou Hamer’s posthumously-awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom is now on display at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

Fannie Lou Hamer challenged the Democratic Party power brokers at the 1964 Democratic National Convention to allow Black delegates to represent Mississippi.

"All of this is on account of we want to register, to become first-class citizens," Hamer told the DNC credentials committee in 1964.
