This is what frustrates me about the perennial "how do we reach the public" conversations. Are students--and by extension their parents/families/caregivers--not "the public?" Are classrooms, museums, parks, and historic sites not venues where we can reach the public at scale?

It's not just the cars. It's that people call child services if they see an unattended kid even in the front yard of the kid's own house.

Seeking Survey Respondents!
Survey of Attitudes and Behaviors around the Intersection of Spirituality and Values and Finance and Economics

I am conducting a survey as part of my Master of Divinity senior seminar project at Harvard Divinity School. The purpose of the survey is to learn more about how people’s spiritual or ethical values relate to their perceptions and decisions around money, finance, and the economy.

Any adult can take this survey; you do not need to consider yourself religious, spiritual, financially savvy, or any other qualifier.

I expect that it will take 20-25 minutes to complete this survey online. Your data will be anonymized, meaning that I will not have access to any identifying information. Findings will be shared in aggregate, and comments will be quoted without attribution.

To take the survey, please click on this QR code or visit this link.

This is the game theoretic correct answer. Costs for bad behavior are insurance against future bad behavior. In the language of deterrence specifically, impoverishing and neutering the Republican power centers is deterrence by denial as well. Can't fund candidates if your ass is broke and in jail.

So, how are we teaching Immigration Politics this fall? I have a syllabus from the spring so you know, at least a quarter of it no longer applies.

Yes, we need to stop them. But people are already being censored. It's too late to thing we can stop them before they start erasing us.

They could tell them apart. I'm discussing what happens when they are mandated by fascist authorities to treat LGBTQ content as harmful, just like states are doing with some library books now. The door is clearly open. The question is what we build to close it again.

On the other hand, what happens when gov demands all LGBTQ content be considered harmful? How do we avoid requiring content the government doesn't like be removed?

You can't argue with these gutter racists. They want late-19C-style Jim Crow. They hate people of color and do not want to see them *at all*. They will not respond to "facts" or moral appeals. Ostracize them. Mock them. Cut them off. Make them hurt from the consequences of their gross inhumanity.

I offer this as yet another example of how professional-level work in any field is probably far more difficult than outsiders appreciate, at least in the long run. Day to day, of course, professionals find quite easy tasks that could be major events for the rest of us. A topic to explore...

Thunderbird and Gmail | Thunderbird Help Thunderbird can be set up to work seamlessly with Google's Gmail. Messages will be synchronized between your local version of Thunderbird and web-based Gmail.

Backing up email is pretty simple--just get a decent desktop app (I like Thunderbird) & configure for your Gmail (support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thu...). You can then download for offline access without impacting webmail access & also copy or move email folders to the local HD.

You could use a spreadsheet on your phone rather than an app, make a Google form for entry or something. Still surveillance risk but not as easy to collect & process as app data.

This is really important. So many people refuse to grieve for the future we collectively lost in 2020 and have continued to pretend we didn't lose ever since.

Civic Holiday - Wikipedia

New idea about how to deal with the problem that is Victory Day in Rhode Island: just borrow Canada's Civic Holiday (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_Holiday)! Theirs is the 1st Monday rather than the 2nd, but close enough, & it seems to have space for more random events under its very large umbrella.

Look at what happens to male teacher salaries (blue line) v.s. female teacher salaries (red line) after collective bargaining laws expire.

Depends on the cba, but union due process protections in labor-friendly states are definitely stronger protection than tenure alone, & merit pay/pay step systems can be bargained into contracts.

Though lower-resources institutions in labor-friendly states at least have unions, which can mitigate against some of the other losses.

Elsewhere, I’ve seen folks talk about the deals as paradoxical because they ban DEI for most but require it for Jewish students. I think that’s likely a misread. In practice, they require protections for Zionism & repression of anti-Zionism. Many Jews will be harmed by this, as we saw last year.

Also, I think the best benefit of RCV is in how people campaign. See, e.g., New York City. I want to see that kind of collaborative campaigning more!

People need to stop resigning in protest. If you're going to end up out of a job anyway, make them fire you for doing what is right.
