It's been upgrade I believe to 8.8 magnitude. When the 2011 quake hit Japan in 2011, it was initially rate at 8.8-8.9. So, yeah this is a very serious quake. Japan is already getting hit by the tsunami, so it was hit Hawaii and the West Coast soon.
