Actually listening to a diverse team, creating that psychologically safe environment, and incorporating their influence into your decision making IS the hard work. The rest is just... stuff. All else flows from that point. And not enough organizations are doing it well.

Importantly, the diversity alone isn't enough. People on your team also need psychological safety so they *can* raise their concerns. You can't put together a Benetton team but then disregard all of their viewpoints - you might as well not have them, then. They are tokens.

It's meant to add friction to the otherwise easy slide into bad ideas. Diversity of background, experience, social identity and impact of those exact decisions is what allows teams to pump the brakes, consider all the options, and proceed with caution.

To expand on this bc I'm in a mood, today I was thinking about how diverse and inclusive teams have a ton of documented benefits but that doesn't mean they're easy. It's HARD to coordinate diverse groups - but that's the point. It's meant to be hard. It's meant to complicate decision-making.

The substance of the most serious underlying problem here is spoken to in this piece. Einstein etc poison the well for education access online, and if not seen and treated as fraud will affect the credibility of academic degrees for *normal students* not well off enough to be a Brown dropout.

Also I’m not gonna sit here actually living just miles from the Maine border as a Black Jewish woman and be kind about people demanding that I repeatedly perform a song and dance about his tattoos and Reddit posts to indicate my awareness of them for strangers who don’t live in this social location

of all the things I have taught my 16 year old, the one where they create separate folders for separate years and separate classes and put homework in each, rather than just putting everything in their google drive, might be the most useful.

Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.
