One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

I just got mine at CVS and it was possibly the least painful shot I've ever had?? Like, I didn't even feel it! Crazy.

Got a really lovely (too much, really!) shout-out at work and man. I wish more organizations would realize that words of appreciation cost you nothing but mean so much. I know not every org can dig up more money for salaries or bonuses or other benefits, but being SEEN goes a long way.

JB Pritzker has also been emphatically placing Trump's mental decline squarely on the agenda. On our pod, he adds a new element: People around Trump are using his decline to manipulate him, so they're less likely to intervene. More Dems should say this. 1/

Haha, I was just telling someone yesterday about when we moved from Australia to metro Detroit in '98 and my parents would just like, merrily take us all to dinner in the city, and all the white suburbanites were like YOU WHAT. We didn't know their 'rules' so we just went and it was fine πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to β€œstudy the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most β€œconclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Imagine studying a technology whose presence in the classroom is so detrimental to the development of writing and research skills (including even the will to know the sources behind claims!) that mitigating its effects becomes a central goal of course design, and concluding with tips on adopting it.

Another one of these, a Kavanaugh Arrest of a citizen. No warrant, no PC, no nothing, just racism and the power to threaten a citizen with violence, kidnap them, and return them after hours of missed work. No explanation or apology.

ICE must be abolished, but also we must fix the Court.

A composition of two images, each showing a white and brindle dog and a striped cat. The top photo shows the dog as a puppy, sleeping on the larger cat. The bottom photo shows the same dog fully grown, resting his head on the (much smaller) cat.

Aww, poor girlie. I get it - people used to cross the street when they saw me walking Cerb. Little did they know he was the world's most delicate hot-house flower who would crumple if you so much as looked at him harshly.πŸ˜…

Haha, Chows also give me pause. When I think about "dogs I'm not gonna say hi to," it's gotta be like... Chows, Akita, anything looking like an Ovcharka, German Shepherds (sorry folks), and Huskie/Malamute-looking things.

Anytime! That author has a couple pieces on this subject, and then there's some interesting historical work out there, too, about past perceptions of the breed(s) and when, exactly, public opinion turned toward or away. Enjoy!

Oof, I so feel that. I have owned several dog-reactive dogs - no human aggression whatsoever, but very scared (& therefore reactive) toward other dogs. I know this, I take all necessary precautions, and yet our worlds are always made smaller by other "good dog" owners who let their dogs roam.

The history around bad raps for certain dog breeds is really interesting! I approach it from sociology & public health perspectives (and also experience owning and working with "bull" breeds, including temperament testing & competitions). Our view on which breeds are inherently dangerous shifts.
