As flash floods rage, the tropical Atlantic stays mellow » Yale Climate Connections Flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service have hit a record pace this year, while the Atlantic hurricane season stays at a low ebb.

When the inevitable thunderstorm complexes do take shape, they’re now drawing on an atmosphere whose average moisture content has been increased by long-term climate change.

CBS Canceling ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ After Next Season

The NYT story on the Colbert firing doesn't even mention the fact that CBS is now owned by the right wing billionaire Ellison family, a very close political ally to Trump.

Kind of relevant, yeah?

Ironically every report of a road crash these days seems to include a request from police for people to submit dashcam, cctv, doorbell footage for review so there's enough resources available to look at videos of road crimes when it suits them to.

Reporter: How did the Israelis treat you, we saw them giving sandwiches?
Greta Thunberg: They probably have posted lots of PR stunts, they did an illegal act by kidnapping us in international waters but that’s not the real story here. The real story is the genocide in Gaza and systematic starvation.
Reporter: Are you worried about the others?
Greta: Yes…I’m calling for everyone who can to mobilize to demand their immediate release and, of course, to demand not only humanitarian aid being let into Gaza but also a ceasefire and most importantly an end to the occupation, an end to the systemic oppression and violence that Palestinians are facing on an everyday basis.
Reporter: “Why do you think so many countries and governments around the world are just ignoring what’s happening in Gaza?”
Greta Thunberg: “Because of racism.”

quote on a dark blue and purple background from Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), criticizing proposed cuts to science funding in the FY26 U.S. federal budget. The quote reads:

“If enacted, the FY26 budget request would end America’s global scientific leadership. The cuts to science would imperil our nation’s future health, security and prosperity. This budget proposal stands in stark contrast to the President’s call for a renewed commitment to American scientific leadership. Congress has demonstrated a bipartisan commitment to investment in research and must do so again to answer the President’s call.”
The quote is attributed to Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of AAAS and Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals. The AAAS logo appears at the bottom right.

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

Why do Western governments get allowed by Western media to always be late with everything?

Is Western civilisation simply inferior and not up to the task of basic journalism and governance?

"significant, symbolic" indeed, especially if you consider that 5 years ago, the goal was still to peak emissions by 2030. Looks like China is achieving that goal 5 years early!

"How many acts of genocide does it take to make a genocide?"

As people debate the term "genocide," I think back to this question we asked the Biden administration just a few months ago, back in December.

Israeli forces have killed at least 10,000 people since then.

I dislike the phrase "inadequate demand," so often used to explain sluggish economies. We have plenty of demand. But people with real unmet needs lack the money to buy, while the rich can afford superyachts. We have to stop pussyfooting around the need for a massive redistribution of wealth.

Without vultures, carcasses are slow to rot and disease-carrying flies abound “Absolutely disgusting, so grim, the worst fieldwork of my life, but also extremely rewarding in a very odd way,” said Julia Grootaers, describing her three months collecting data among rotting pig…

Researchers in Costa Rica found that pig carcasses decomposed twice as fast when vultures had access to them.

The absence of vultures led to a doubling of fly populations at carcass sites, which could affect human health, since these flies can carry diseases like botulism and anthrax.
