πŸ’§ Leth-allt means β€˜half stream’ - a burn with one high bank. Knowing this would have been vital when moving through the landscape with animals and crossing streams.

#Gaelic place names carry deep knowledge of the land, describing its features and sharing practical insight shaped by #generations.

πŸ’§ Allt means a stream or burn, narrower than an abhainn (river), such as Abhainn Mhoireasdan, the River Moriston beside the estate.

πŸ’§ Caochan describes a small stream that disappears from view along its course - as Caochan na Sgochraich does, cutting a notch through the landscape.

The streams and rivers of Dundreggan πŸ’§ #Gaelic has many more words than English for describing and connecting with the #landscape - from hills and bogs to different types of rivers and streams.

At Dundreggan, you’ll find several of these in our place names: Allt, Caochan and Leth-allt. [continued]

These four beavers join the seven reintroduced last October and are settling into their new home. Glen Affric provides plenty of #habitat for them to integrate into the local ecosystem. Their activity will create and enhance habitats for a wide variety of plants and animals.

Trees for Life has been working in partnership with Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), which manages the reserve, on the initiative since 2022, supported by @beavertrust.bsky.social 🦫The project has included three phases of extensive consultations with local #communities and land managers.

Alan McDonnell, our Head of Nature Restoration, said: β€œThe return of beavers to Glen Affric is a #wildlife success story four centuries in the making – a project with strong local community #volunteer involvement, offering hope...and a better future for biodiversity and people.”

Every letter in the Gaelic alphabet is linked to a tree. 🌳 The very structure of the language reflects a deep connection between people and the natural world, and an understanding of the practical and cultural importance of trees.

This #ValentinesDay, we’re celebrating the love story of two volunteers - Lucy and Andy - who met on a #Rewilding Week 22 years ago.

After the week, Lucy and Andy stayed in touch. Three years later they got engaged, married in 2010, and welcomed their son Jack in 2017.

Missing Species Appeal - Trees for Life We are fundraising Β£25,000 to support our Missing Species Programme to bring back Scotland's lost keystone animals.

A wilder Highlands is possible but only if we rebuild what’s been lost. 🌳 For centuries, key species have been pushed out of Scotland’s #landscapes. We're bringing them back, so nature can function as it once did.

Help bring Scotland’s #missingspecies home πŸ‘‰

Scottish wildcat information | Trees for Life Rarely seen and famously untameable, the wildcat is an important predator of the Caledonian Forest, but is threatened by interbreeding with feral and hybrid domestic cats.

Late winter is mating season for the Scottish #wildcat, also nicknamed the Highland Tiger 🐈

Thanks to the work of @saveourwildcats.bsky.social, wildcats are being released in the Cairngorms National Park to restore populations and help prevent the extinction of this iconic Scottish species.
