But historically people like William Blake have found Milton's Satan a kind of icon for revolutionary thinking as a counter to political oppression. I don't think a Milton's Satan stan from that perspective is on the same level as, say, an incel who idolizes Patrick Bateman.

This also flattens people's reason for *why* they find a villain persuasive. If you find them persuasive because you genuinely think that they everything they do is correct and awesome, then yeah that's fucked.

This argument really confuses me. I think that Milton's Satan is persuasive and the most compelling character in the narrative. I also think he's clearly the antagonist and makes morally vile decisions.

Counterpoint: some of the worst people alive today are Tolkien fanatics (Thiel, Musk) and Tolkien has perhaps the least interesting, least persuasive villains ever.

A counterpoint I would add to this perspective is that some of the absolute worst people in our society right now aren't quoting Milton's Satan but are avid Tolkien fans. Tolkien, who infamously has the lamest and most unpersuasive villains ever.
