Warmer weather is leading to vanishing winters in North America’s Great Lakes Warming winters are impacting lakes globally. However, most monitoring in the Great Lakes occurs during warmer, calmer weather. A new report highlights how policymakers can improve winter monitoring.

Warming winters are shrinking ice cover on the Great Lakes: shortening winters by about 2 weeks every decade, fueling algal blooms, altering ecosystems, and eroding cultural and recreational traditions.

Frequent disasters expose climate risks to infrastructure in South Asia Last month, floods along the Nepal-China border that killed nine people also destroyed important infrastructure, washing out the primary bridge connecting the two nations and halting trade.

“The risk that goes into building a bridge or other infrastructure is generally based on historical observations of past risk, but this is no longer useful because future risk is different and often much higher.”

Banff, Canmore, Kananaskis region bracing for heavy rain General precipitation amounts will range between 50 to 100 mm by Sunday afternoon, however some areas, especially along the southern foothills could see between 100-200 mm.

Environment Canada is forecasting significant rainfall across the #Banff, #Canmore, and #Kananaskis regions this weekend, with 50–100 mm expected by Sunday, and some localized areas potentially reaching 200 mm. Thunderstorms, hail, and localized flooding are possible.
