Risch urged President Donald Trump's administration to reconsider Washington's security partnership with Uganda, suggesting sanctions and a review of military cooperation with the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He stressed that Muhoozi's actions should not be overlooked, as removing posts and offering an apology did not address the seriousness of the situation or the potential risks to U.S. interests and regional stability. He also warned that the United States would not tolerate instability, particularly when American personnel and lives were at risk. Muhoozi had earlier issued an apology, admitting he had been misinformed and acknowledging the international backlash his comments had caused. He said he had spoken with the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda and reaffirmed that relations between the two countries remained intact, with military cooperation continuing as usual. To ease the diplomatic fallout, Uganda's Ambassador to the U.S., Adonia Ayebare, intervened to calm tensions. Ayebare later confirmed that the issue had been resolved and emphasized the importance of the strong, mutually beneficial relationship between Uganda and the U.S. The controversy arose after Risch called for sanctions in response to reports of election-related violence, including allegations of human rights abuses and claims by opposition leader Bobi Wine that soldiers had raided his home and assaulted his family.
