If you want to help disabled people fight New York's proposed mask ban... wear a mask.

If more people would mask up in solidarity, these important accessibility tools would be harder to ban.

Help us normalize masking and protect your health in the process!

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Stanford University have developed a dual-antibody treatment that remains effective against ALL SARS-CoV-2 variants by targeting a less-mutable part of the virus. This breakthrough could lead to longer-lasting therapies that OUTPACE viral evolution. πŸ§ͺπŸ§΅β¬‡οΈ

F.D.A. Cancels Meeting of Vaccine Experts Scheduled to Advise on Flu Shots The cancellation plays into fears among scientists who worry that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will use his position as health secretary to sow doubts about vaccines.

First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year.

β€œ'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'"

Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder.

Gang, at this point I’m too disillusioned to expect all of you to mask always (even though you should), but for the love of GOD, please at least mask at airports and on planes when you travel to events!!!

So many people are skipping alt text or half-assing it so poorly it's an insult.

Was the first image the only one deserving a caption?
Do people not deserve to know what's in your photos?

Don't just put the image credit or a fun anecdote in the alt text, describe the image.

COVID is not just a respiratory virus. It’s not a cold. It’s not β€œmild”.

It’s a multi system vascular virus that can do damage throughout your body.

The more we learn about what it does to the heart, the more convinced we should be to mask up.

19.02.2025 01:28 β€” πŸ‘ 507    πŸ” 194    πŸ’¬ 15    πŸ“Œ 0

First things first, mask bans making masking a criminal offence. They make the act of wearing a mask illegal.

Sure there may be medical exemptions, but they’re incredibly problematic.

Lawmakers specifically chose not to exempt medical masks and respirators. The burden is on the wearer /2

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 168    πŸ” 17    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 1

Second, public perception around masking is very different now than it was before Covid.

People are irrationally angry when they see a mask. They’ve been politicized and folks have created an identity in their minds about who a masker is. A liberal. A sheep. Someone who’s anti-freedom.

/3

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 157    πŸ” 20    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

None of their preconceived notions are based in fact or reality, but they fuel the anger and rage that gets directed at maskers every day.

When you enact a mask ban, you embolden these people. They aren’t reading the bills and considering medical exemptions.

They just hear they’re banned. /4

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 158    πŸ” 17    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

As a result they think they can demand you remove your mask. They may call the police on you. They will certainly feel justified in judging and targeting maskers and declaring that they’re doing β€œsomething wrong”.

This emboldening creates a dangerous situation that could easily lead to violence /5

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 151    πŸ” 19    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

This is why we must discuss anti mask sentiment when talking about mask bans.

Many disabled people masked before covid. I was one of them. The worst I ever got was a strange look or someone moving far away from me on transit

Since mask mandates ended I’ve been coughed on, spit at and yelled at /6

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 163    πŸ” 22    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 1

People view masks as bad and loathe anyone who’s still wearing them.

When you publicly enact a mask ban, you’re telling those people they’re right. That it’s ok to harass people for masking. That it’s wrong to wear a mask and protect your health.

You’re increasing the hostility. /7

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 157    πŸ” 27    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Finally there’s the issue of ableism. Mask bans make public spaces less accessible. Period.

For many of us a good mask is the only reason we can be out in public. If you make it a crime, we risk being stopped by the police and forced to justify our disabilities. /8

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 152    πŸ” 24    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Many of us have a difficult time getting healthcare workers to take us seriously, but we’re supposed to assume law enforcement will believe we’re masking for the right reasons?

That’s a risk we should never be forced to take. The interaction alone would negatively impact our baseline /9

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 143    πŸ” 15    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Lastly… any reason for wearing a mask should be good enough.

We are still in a global pandemic. Millions are dead, even more are disabled. People are still dying every week.

Wearing a mask to protect yourself - whether disabled or not - is a smart and caring choice /10

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 234    πŸ” 34    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

As more States propose mask bans, I want to take a moment to discuss claims that it’s β€œfear mongering” to say that masking is illegal.

People claim the medical exemption is β€œgood enough”.

This ignores three critical points. Public perception, anti mask sentiment and rampant ableism

🧡

19.02.2025 03:24 β€” πŸ‘ 607    πŸ” 194    πŸ’¬ 14    πŸ“Œ 20

When you engage in disability justice, you begin to see the world differently. You see how deep ableism runs and how many people believe those with chronic health conditions are 'less than'.

The Nazis targeted us first because they knew no one would care. We need people to care now.

14.02.2025 23:47 β€” πŸ‘ 465    πŸ” 161    πŸ’¬ 7    πŸ“Œ 3

A lot of chronic illness is post viral. People are healthy until they get flu, mono, covid etc

It only takes one infection to upend your life & leave you with severe disabilities

RFK Jr says he wants to end chronic illness epidemic & yet will make avoiding viruses harder

Get boosted. Wear a mask.

We have heard that the entire flu resources section of website is going down tonight.

You can check your local health dept for information about flu.

We will update as we learn more.

Please keep in mind that many of your disabled friends likely need more accommodations now and in the coming days. AND many of your neighbors will BECOME disabled in the coming days. Don’t wait to educate yourself on how to not be useless.

No one is immune from disability. It can happen to anyone at anytime, regardless of how 'young and healthy' you are.

Stop believing you will be the exception, and start engaging in disability justice. It's far easier to fight for better support and treatment while you still have your health.

This was one of RFK Jr.’s first orders after being sworn in.

Just an astonishing denial of science and will cause so much pain to the 45 million Americans facing mental health challenges.

Re: United States v. Eric Adams, 24 Cr. 556 (DEH)
Mr. Bove,
I have received correspondence indicating that I refused your order to move to dismiss the indictment against Eric Adams without prejudice, subject to certain conditions, including the express possibility of reinstatement of the indictment. That is not exactly correct. The U.S.
Attorney, Danielle R. Sassoon, never asked me to file such a motion, and I therefore never had an opportunity to refuse. But I am entirely in agreement with her decision not to do so, for the reasons stated in her February 12, 2025 letter to the Attorney General.
In short, the first justification for the motion-that Damian Williams's role in the case somehow tainted a valid indictment supported by ample evidence, and pursued under four different U.S. attorneys is so weak as to be transparently pretextual. The second justification is worse.
No system of ordered liberty can allow the Government to use the carrot of dismissing charges, or the stick of threatening to bring them again, to induce an elected official to support its policy objectives.
There is a tradition in public service of resigning in a last-ditch effort to head off a serious mistake. Some will view the mistake you are committing here in the light of their generally negative views of the new Administration. I do not share those views. I can even understand how a Chief Executive whose background is in business and politics might see the contemplated dismissal-with-leverage as a good, if distasteful, deal. But any assistant U.S. attorney would know much i i red oril, in this ily. wing the perset arthro he Reside is ving to,
give him that advice, then I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me.
Please consider this my resignation. It has been an honor to serve as a prosecutor in the
Southern District of New York.

Hagan Scotten
