As do I, and I can’t ascertain whether it is or not since it’s on substack.

Right? But I also don’t trust substack EXCLUSIVES.

She told me to just read the Cliffs Notes for Tess of the D’Urbervilles because I hated it so much.

I was really lucky to have an AP English teacher who was vocal about the difference in stuff we had to read for the test and stuff we read for joy, and that there was room for β€˜I am never going to like this book. Why is it a thing?’ In discussions.

Has anyone summarized this elsewhere since the original was posted? I’m not reading a substack.

I suspected as much. (Had you not said you had the same impulse, I was going to start searching.)

I feel seen.

Truer words, y’all.

Peasant food is where all the good stuff lives.

Dad liked SPAM. I think that was a mom refusal.

03.03.2026 02:16 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I was one of four. A can of hash and some eggs is a whole big breakfast for six people!

03.03.2026 02:15 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Because you liked it AFTER you said it looked like dog food.

Also because hash is great.

Corned beef hash was CENTRAL to my upbringing. My dad was one of 9 kids (Irish Catholic, baby!) and loooooooved hash because he grew up on it. We loved it because it was delicious. Poor food!

03.03.2026 02:12 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Ooh, excellent.

03.03.2026 01:57 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

To be fair, that’s because that branch does not have poker faces. All the emotions all over your face all the time. Too many Irish people in one place.

We are indeed!

03.03.2026 01:42 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Oooooooooh. I have all of this!

I have consulted the giant and he’s amenable to rice and beans tomorrow. YES.

03.03.2026 01:29 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Was ANYTHING we ate then good for us? No. (Any diet that by necessity is made of canned and boxed food is going to be pretty awful.)

03.03.2026 01:22 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I ALSO lived on beans and rice. Mmmmm, beans and rice.

03.03.2026 01:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You know what? Excellent point. A positive thing my generation (mostly) solidified on well before our parents, LGBTQ+ rights in particular.

03.03.2026 01:19 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I WISH I’d thought of that in college.

03.03.2026 01:17 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

That’s when I had money to do it. Stop.

03.03.2026 00:59 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Swing state bullshit as usual.

02.03.2026 22:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes! I used to chop up some olives and throw in tomatoes and peppers with paprika, oregano, and garlic powder for a poor girls’s ropa vieja.

02.03.2026 22:19 β€” πŸ‘ 26    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

If there’s ANYTHING the Iraq war should have taught whatever generation I’m a part of, it’s to stick to what you know is right in the first place, because everyone is going to agree with you in 20 years and you get to keep your morals intact.

02.03.2026 22:12 β€” πŸ‘ 11    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 1

Although now I want boxed Mac and cheese with hamburger for dinner.

02.03.2026 21:57 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Ask any (meat eating) American college student over the last several decades and I guarantee they eat this regularly. It’s just Fortune being incredibly weird about food being expensive.

02.03.2026 21:56 β€” πŸ‘ 125    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

That’s what I ate for most of my senior year in college with varying spices.

WHY ARE YOU ALL BEING SO WEIRD ABOUT FOOD?
