I've been reading Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, Persepolis. It's an autobiographical account of growing up in Iran after the Islamic Revolution, moving to Europe as a student to live freely, and eventually becoming homesick (and homeless) and returning to Iran.

Scientific progress is both cool and body-horror-esque: Doctors saved a man with a critical, incurable lung infection by removing both his lungs (!) and keeping him alive that way for 48 hours (!!) with ECMO until he could get a transplant.
