It's a really good story, a deeply humanizing account of life in a country that the media trains us to see as the enemy, and an indictment of just how badly America has failed for what it's done and is still doing to the Iranian people.
28.02.2026 01:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've been reading Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, Persepolis. It's an autobiographical account of growing up in Iran after the Islamic Revolution, moving to Europe as a student to live freely, and eventually becoming homesick (and homeless) and returning to Iran.

Judge Fred Biery: A defender of human rights and secularism, by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
A hurricane of authoritarianism is crashing against the walls of the American constitutional system. Judges like this one are the last line of defense.

Scientific progress is both cool and body-horror-esque: Doctors saved a man with a critical, incurable lung infection by removing both his lungs (!) and keeping him alive that way for 48 hours (!!) with ECMO until he could get a transplant.

American brain drain, by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
We used to be the world's haven for science, but now scientists are fleeing the U.S. for safer shores. China, the EU, Canada and other nations will benefit from our losses.

American autocracy, by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
The U.S. government is waging war on its own people. Other countries have thrown off the yoke of autocratic rule in the past, and their experience gives Americans a guide on what we should do.

The good news, as it were, is that the Trump administration is both incompetent and massively unpopular. Most successful autocrats (Chavez, Putin, Bukele) had supermajority popular support, at least initially.
12.01.2026 19:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0He argues that elite acquiescence is because Americans lack a "shared memory of authoritarianism", unlike other countries, such as South Korea and Brazil, that successfully defeated attempted authoritarian takeovers. They knew what to do in the face of the threat; we don't.
