The thing is... I have never met a dev who set out to make something people didn't like. They may have been mistaken in trying to guess (or stubborn in thinking they know better), but the whole reason people make games is so that people will play them.

It's similar to "targeting" a 90+ metacritic because then the team will arrive to exceed that mandate and push to improve the game's quality as much as possible.

But then, when the game ships because of enforced date, the 85 it gets is a gross failure to meet expectations.

I don't think that was the intended take away... more that the feedback was better kept between the two of them and blurting out "I told you so" doesn't often make you look good for a lot of different reasons.

That had a big impact on me.

I was once in a meeting where the Product Manager said, "I told you we should have done it this way" to the Brand Manager and the Brand Manager took the PM aside after the meeting and said, "I don't recommend you do that again in a meeting because it makes both of us look bad..."
