Mystery Solved! Turns out it is "Webinar.tv" whose disgusting and unethical business model is: register for a zoom call under a fake name and email address, record it without consent and put it on a public website with genAI summary and everyone's names and faces and then charge for access. WTAF.

I'm excited to be a co author on this new paper, "Computational Hermeneutics," with a bunch of other great scholars from the humanities + computer science. In it, we lay out concepts for evaluating gen AI's capacity for interpretation esp ambiguity, context, etc. www.frontiersin.org/journals/art...

What might stop authors from wanting to publish an experimental book?

@emmagallon.bsky.social says often it’s a widespread lack of awareness of what can be done. What are the possibilities for publishing your research in different ways? Publishers need to show ppl what’s possible.

This is a fantastic description of the problem of historical data fragmentation and enclosure, with actionable suggestions. I would add: sources should be findable and accessible by eg Claude Code. It has never been easier to build custom views and analytics, the sources are the limiting factor.

Really good position paper on a legitimately urgent question - how humanists/historians can actively participate in, shape & organize the explosion of digitized historical data across commercial + public contexts. We can't sit this one out. The call for standards & norms is esp well taken + crucial.

Last summer, I got super into plotting addresses of nineteenth-century British pornographers that I'd collected as part of a project using the National Library of Scotland's Georeferenced Maps. Collecting the data was a painstaking process, as was plotting it as many of these addresses no longer +

I’m a little disappointed by some of the responses to this (not Matt’s, which I take to be plain wit). But there is obviously a long tradition of studying low culture, mass culture, kitsch, & etc., and we ignore this latest aesthetic category at our peril. To pretend otherwise is anti-intellectual.
