Every day, families are making the impossible decision between purchasing prescription drugs they need to function, or putting food on the table. We cannot in good conscience let people suffer when we have the means to solve the issue.

It was amazing to learn from them about their robot designs and passions for engineering and technology. Special thanks to Principal Costilla and Assistant Principal Stevenson for inviting us and showing us around.

My team and I had a great visit to Reilly Elementary Friday morning! We even got to meet the students in FIRST Lego Robotics team “Dessert Chickens,” who recently placed 9th in their robotics competition!

We discussed the importance of advocating for legislation addressing these issues and ensuring we have affordable housing options for our neighbors, especially as we are anticipating cuts in support from federal funding. Housing is a human right, and Illinois policy should reflect this value.

It was sobering to attend the Keep Chicago Housed legislative breakfast and hear firsthand accounts from community members who are experiencing homelessness or have lost loved ones to the cruelty of our housing affordability crisis.

These policy changes must cross the finish line for our state to remain a beacon of hope in the Midwest and take a firm stand against this administration’s reign of terror.

I have been a fierce ally of ICIRR’s policies and work to protect our neighbors as we are senselessly targeted by federal agents based on the color of our skin and the language that we speak.

I was proud to join advocates, immigrants, and my colleagues for ICIRR’s 2026 Policy Summit and sign on to their 2026 policy platform–including health care for all, ICE out of Chicago, protections for our data, and more common-sense, people-focused solutions.

My district team had a great time at our Senior Bingo event at the Copernicus Center this week! We were able to share the Valentine's love with our elders and come together in community.

I had a great visit at Governors State University this week, where I met with faculty and learned about their student success center. It was great to hear how this institution is investing in our young people’s futures.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to hear directly from clinics and legislative champions as we continue working to expand equitable access to care across Illinois.

Clinics serve patients living at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level, with 80% of patients identifying as people of color, and provide essential language access services.

A $15 million investment is needed in FY27 to sustain this work, building on last year’s $9 million investment that delivered $70 million in health care value through direct services and reduced emergency room use.

These conversations are especially important right now, as federal budget cuts could cause up to 500,000 Illinoisans to lose Medicaid coverage. Free and charitable clinics play a critical role in preventing gaps in care, but they need continued support from the legislature.

My team recently attended the Illinois Free & Charitable Clinics Legislative Reception, where he joined clinic tours and conversations with CommunityHealth, The Night Ministry, Mobile Care Chicago, Old Irving Park Community Clinic, and other partners from across the state.

I had a great visit with Falconer Elementary this morning meeting with Principal Comse. I affirmed to them my commitment to fighting for more funding for our K-12 schools and giving these young people and their educators the resources they need to succeed.

We talked about the importance of fully funding education on all levels, from K-12 to higher ed, and how these investments will support Latinos for generations to come succeed. Special thanks to NEIU El Centro campus in my district for hosting this important conversation.

I am excited to work with this coalition and my house counter part, Rep. Will Davis this year. This is beyond a Chicago problem. It is state wide. We will keep fighting to make sure every child in Illinois has what they need.

We must fully fund the EBF and mandated categoricals our communities depend upon, like nutrition, bilingual supports, transportation, and special education. All students deserve a high-quality education, and it is past time that we ensure they receive this.

This bill would ensure that we are fully funding our K-12 schools as we are required to under the Evidence Based Funding model.

This morning, I joined coalition members, including Chicago Teachers Union, Illinois Federation of Teachers, the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association, parents, community organizations and other elected officials for a press conference on my new legislation, Senate Bill 3701.

Our Immigration and Rapid Response Coordinator Anthony joined Alderwoman Ruth Cruz, State Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, and other local leaders for a Senior Bingo event this weekend!
