Collins playing that hybrid midfield/centre back role. Will Thomas Frank look at that as a possibility for Nathan or Ajer to play when they need a defensive approach, say at Arsenal away?

Exactly. Unlikely that Brentford would sell in January and if forced it would be at a premium which would put off a lot of interest. Summer might be a different matter.
