Holmes’s canon first case is about his university boyfriend, so no one is brave enough to touch that one. But gosh is it exhausting to keep doing this

Sherlock Holmes adaptations: We need to give Holmes a tragic origin story.
Me: Something like his first ever case makes his only friend an orphan and he leaves Holmes forever? And it has a very dramatic mutiny and shipwreck. Also it’s a canon story.
SH adaptations: No. It has to be a dead woman.
