A cloaked figure stands in a dark pocket of forest illuminated by a floating sphere of light. Trees rise above dwarfing the figure at they peak at the top center of the canvas, giving way to twilight sky that seems to glow light blue beyond the trees and darken reveal stars.

Forged iron head; wooden shaft spiral‑wrapped with a bronze strip; H 179.8 cm, blade 28 x 25.5 cm. Collection: Nara National Museum. Classified as an Important Cultural Property. Those two hearts are not about romance. In Japan they are inome, the boar’s eye, a very old apotropaic sign cut into weapons, temple fittings and even windows to draw off misfortune and summon courage.
