The St Vincent eruption shows that preparedness and early anticipatory action can avert a volcanic disaster!

Now that it's thought the sesimic activity around Santorini is caused by magma, authorities plan an emergency port. Important to note that the vast proportion of magmatic unrest on volcanoes doesn't lead to eruptions, but preparation is key in cases where they might.

It does look like the Washington VAAC (Volcanic Ash Advisory Center) is still up and issuing alerts, but if that stops ... ho boy, that could get messy. The VAAC is a NOAA operation.

Hunga-Tonga volcano eruption sparks concern – DW – 07/02/2024 When underwater volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai erupted in the South Pacific in 2022 researchers were alarmed. The are now calling for closer volcano monitoring.

Today marks 3 years since the powerful eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano that generated a tsunami that struck Tonga & severed communication lines. This eruption was a key motivator for the formation of GVRA & our co-founders @mikevolc.bsky.social & @laramani14.bsky.social spoke to DW about it:

The Lewotobi volcano activity remains high. Tonight there has been another high-magnitude eruption at 02:41 WITA from the northwest summit vent. Explosions continue, with ash columns up to 15.2 km high. ⚒️ 🌋
