I’m bi in in the Black way, just like i am woman in the Black way. If you don’t know what i mean, read more Black feminist works circa1960-1980 and stay the fuck out the business 🙂‍↕️

It’s an odd phenomenon to witness. But then again i have to remember i was raised in a very Black, very queer family with a mother who was the only hairdresser in the area in the 80s and 90s who would assist queer and trans ppl. So like. I realize my upbringing was biased lmao.

2. Country folks over 60 immediately correct themselves if they misgender someone. They, on a whole, respect gender diversity. A lot of older folks in my area even champion it??? It’s the ppl who are like 35-50 who are the insane bigots? And it’s particularly bad with transplants.

I live in a northern state but the minute i cross over into Kentucky, Tennessee, or Georgia (and the further south i get) I’m treated more feminine. I have to perform gender less. There’s nothing to “prove” per se. It’s hard to explain.

I’m here for two reasons.
1. I’m cis gender and feel like my presentation is quite feminine. However, white ppl (white queer ppl especially) up north are eager to masculinize me in a way that white southern folks are not. And i think most of it is the proximity (or lack thereof) to Blackness.

There was still bigotry. Queer and trans folks weren’t 100% safe, but it seemed like, at least in my small towns, ppl were more eager to fold folks into the fabric of our communities instead of ostracizing them?

Like country folks of a certain age are not phased by trans folks at all. I was literally raised to ask adults what honorific they preferred because their gender expression may not match the one (i.e. Mr., Ma’am, sir, Miss, etc) i might’ve used. Acceptance wasnt perfect by any means.

I always struggle with knowing if my exposure to queerness/transness was unique to my upbringing OR if it was a generalized southern thing. Because i felt like was all had an Uncle Sue or an Aunt Johnny. Even the white folks. We would sell dinners for folks to get their gender affirming surgeries

Kinda need to read more about all of it before i add my two cents. All of have to say about it currently are personal experiences.

kinda want to read a piece abt the perception of Black gender identity in America, particularly as it relates to northernness vs southernness…kinda want to write a piece abt the prevalence southern gender divergence, its acceptance, & how starkly it changed once northerners started migrating south…
