#OTD in 1897, Baruch Steinberg, the Chief Rabbi of the Polish Army, was born in Przemyślanych (currently in Ukraine).
His Polish-Jewish family came from a long line of rabbinical traditions, and he was ordained during the First World War, about the same time his family moved to Vienna.

8 December 1934 | A French Jewish girl, Solange Slabodzinski, was born in Paris.
She was deported to #Auschwitz from Drancy on 21 August 1942. She was murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.

#OTD in 1943, 644 men on USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) were lost when the escort carrier was torpedoed. It was the largest loss of life in the sinking of a U.S. carrier. Among those killed was Dorie Miller who had been awarded the Navy Cross for his actions at Pearl Harbor.

During the German occupation, she lived in Warsaw, where she completed her primary school education.
She participated in the Warsaw Uprising and afterwards became a POW at Stalag VI C Oberlangen.
