Born this day in 1884, on Neskuchnoye estate in Ukraine, the marvelous painter Zinaida Serebriakova. After my time, but worth making an exception! Here by herself at the mirror in 1909.

My photo shows an exceptionally well-preserved pair of women's flat leather slip on shoes decorated with gold leaf. The leather appears dark brown in colour, but originally it may have been purple or red. They have a high front coming up to a double lobed extension. The heel finishes with a high back tab. The tab on the right shoe has not survived. The front of each shoe is embellished with a gold disc-shaped motif enclosing eight smaller circles which looks similar to the circular rotary dial of an old-fashioned telephone! Within each of the small circles is an embroidered star. Length 26cm. Max width 8cm. From Egypt, circa 300-500 AD, Coptic period. On display at the V&A Museum, London.

Maar toch: de personages zijn bont, de dialogen spits, het tempo ligt hoog, er is de permanente suggestie van seks, er hangt altijd geweld in de lucht. En op 120 pagina's ben je er vanaf.

Ik weet zeker dat als je op school pubers zou verplichten om 'The Big Sleep' te lezen, ze dat allemaal met plezier zouden lezen en analyseren bovendien. Langs de andere kant wordt bij mij thuis elke dag bewezen dat ik totaal niets van pubers begrijp, dus waarschijnlijk is dat helemaal fout.

Gisteravond, mopperend en zuchtend, voor de ontelbaarste keer, 'The Big Sleep' beginnen lezen. Uiteindelijk te laat gaan slapen omdat er steeds nog één hoofdstuk gelezen moest worden. Wat een boek. Alleen al de scène met de stervende generaal in de broeikas vol orchideeën kan ik 100 keer lezen.

Maar er zijn enkele boeken die ik áltijd wel wil lezen. 'Catch-22', maar da's een stevige kluif, en al wat ik nodig heb is een klein duwtje in de rug, iets kort en makkelijk maar steengoed en intents, om me door deze bui van leeslethargie te helpen. Het panacee: Raymond Chandler.

Soms sta ik lusteloos voor mijn boekenkast en zeur tegen mezelf over wat ik nu zal lezen. Ik heb veel ongelezen boeken, over uiteenlopende onderwerpen in verschillende genres, maar niet spreekt me echt aan en ik heb nergens zin in; kortom, ik wil wel lezen maar ik weet niet wat ik wil lezen.

So this week shall I write about how killing unarmed civilians is murder or about how unwise it would be to limit the human right against torture.

I've had a couple of comments about this cartoon, which I thought would be a great opportunity to drill down in excruciatingly needless detail about my process. Someone said how much did I deliberate over the use of the word 'Pig' and another suggested it should say 'Hog'. So, here was my thinking:

Ik zou denken dat een minister individuele dossiers niet bespreekt in het parlement, gezien de gevoeligheid van een asielaanvraag.

Dit boek begint bij die gijzelingen, maar gaat eigenlijk over de vraag hoe je met terroristisch geweld kan of moet omgaan. Ik schreef jaren geleden een brief aan Westerman over dit boek. Nooit verstuurd, natuurlijk.
