Ancient blue Roman intaglio, engraved with the figure of a nude male in motion, shown in profile. The figure holds a round object in one hand and appears to be stepping forward. The surface is weathered and encrusted with earth, but the engraving remains discernible. The stone has a rich blue hue with lighter and darker streaks, set against a plain white background.

Tiny but powerful, this Roman intaglio is carved from lapis lazuli—a stone already prized for millennia by the time it was buried in Britain. The figure engraved on its face is Harpocrates, god of silence and secrecy, often associated with protection and mystery in Roman-Egyptian religion.
