31.12.2025 17:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In our national study of hospitalizations from 2016-2022, we describe overall stable rates of alcohol-related hospitalizations but increasing inpatient mortality, length of stay, patient complexity, and cost. Just published in @jamanetworkopen.comπ
23.12.2025 19:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0π¨Our new paper in @jhospmedicine.bsky.social describes large hospital-level variation in initiation of medications for alcohol use disorder during alcohol withdrawal hospitalizations. Huge opportunity for increasing uptake of evidence based treatment! @cudivhospmed.bsky.social
14.10.2025 15:58 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Nearly one in 10 people with substance use disorders are hospitalized in a year, yet disorder treatment often isnβt available, says a new study by @cudeptofmedicine.bsky.social faculty @edenbernstein.bsky.social, Gina Kruse, MD, and Susan Calcaterra, MD, MPH. @cuanschutz.bsky.social #cucityofhealth
29.04.2025 18:02 β π 2 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Bottom line: Both are great (and underutilized!) options to initiate for AUD at hospital discharge. As with everything, would heavily consider local factors and patient preferences in decision-making, but if adherence to pills is a barrier then injectable naltrexone might be a good choice
21.04.2025 18:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Both strategies resulted in post-hospitalization reduction in drinking. While there was no significant difference in drinking outcomes btw groups, adherence was better in the injectable arm.
21.04.2025 18:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Excellent trial comparing oral vs injectable naltrexone at hospital discharge π
21.04.2025 18:56 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Grateful for support from coauthors and mentors from @cudivhospmed.bsky.social @cudeptofmedicine.bsky.social and @yaleadm.bsky.social
31.03.2025 22:10 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Unfortunately, most hospitalized patients with substance use disorders don't receive evidence-based treatment. These findings highlight that this is a missed opportunity to help millions of people each year βΌοΈ
31.03.2025 22:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Those who were hospitalized were unsurprisingly older and had more medical and psychiatric co-morbidities compared to those who weren't.
31.03.2025 22:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0However, given the underlying prevalence of substance use disorders, tobacco and alcohol use disorders accounted for the largest overall prevalence of hospitalizations.
31.03.2025 22:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hospitalizations were common! 10% of adults with SUD reported past-year hospitalizations including nearly 1 in 4 of those with opioid use disorder.
31.03.2025 22:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We used a national survey (NSDUH) to identify US adults with substance use disorders in 2022 and describe their self-reported prevalence of past-year hospitalizations.
31.03.2025 22:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hospitalizations present unmet opportunities for addiction treatment engagement. Our new paper in @annalsofim.bsky.social describes the prevalence of hospitalizations among adults with substance use disorders to inform the reach of hospital-based addiction treatment programsπ§΅

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.
I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.
