View from Southern Morocco where the Sahara falls down to the Atlantic Ocean. The sun is shining brilliantly and the sky is cloudless. The photo is taken from the top of a rocky sandstone cliff, the same colour as the distant sand. The sea in the bay is dark blue reflecting the blue of the sky. There is a small spit of land projecting into the sea on the left side at the edge of which is a thin band of seaweed and in the distance the sand dunes form a hard line where they meet the sea on the other side of the bay. It looks hot (it was - our maximum temp while we were there was 45 deg celcius π₯΅)

Where The Desert Meets The Sea
A rim of seaweed lent a hint of green but the salty sea gave few plants any hope of water and the sand met the the softly lapping waves in a harsh line, matching the fierceness of the sun

View of the Moroccan landscape in the high Atlas Mountains. The steep slopes are barren with red sandstone rocks, layers eroded away giving a striped appearance, while the softer slopes are tinged faintly green from sparse vegetation clinging onto life with the help of moisture in the mountain air in summer and snow in winter. in the valley the small stream is enough to give life to green trees and strong bushes making a marked contrast to the surrounding drier land. The layers of hills fade away into the background lit by the dappled light of the sun finding its way through the small blue gaps in the clouds. On the edge of a nearer hill a town is lit up by the sun, seemingly perched on a descending ridge. Zooming in reveals flat topped white buildings and a beautiful Minaret all of which look so clean amongst the rest of the dusty landscape

Did u know? This autumn, don't clear away dead plants. Ladybirds sleep in curled up leaves; bees overwinter in hollow stems; caterpillars take refuge in long grass & spiders rely on dead stems to hang their webs on. It might look like *rubbish* to you, but it's home to someone else. πΏπ±π¬π§π±ππ·οΈπͺ²ππ

Once again, for those in the back, our native pollinators love dandelions and thistles. There was an abundance of these butterflies out today.

Common Ragwort (biennial plant) a yellow flower, which has Cinnibar moth caterpillars on it which are orange and black striped, they feed on the plant, also Common Blue butterflies on flower visiting for nectar, growing alongside is a thistle, maybe Creeping Thistle a perennial plant spreading by rhizome growth. Beyond is the edge of a wheat crop with Common Poppy growing (an annual plant). A large flock of House Sparrow feeding on and flying into crop giving an impression of large numbers of birds. Beyond a small glimpse of a hedged field system, with perhaps Elm trees once a common sight in the rural landscape, blue sky and clouds complete this bucolic landscape.
Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1 December 1901 β 7 February 1979) was a major visual influence on my childhood. House Sparrows feeding on wheat, a story about abundance, about a pest, which became a beloved bird (for many people) which became scarce.

Thanks for the brilliant thread - I was having a meal with some farmer friends the other day and his nonagenarian father, also a farmer, was describing how abundant the house sparrows were being paid by his dad the numbers he shot in the fields - still considers them to be a pest

Photo of the island of Bearnaraigh Beag taken from the small cemetery hiding behind a wall in the rain. In the foreground is a lichen covered wall leading out to the sea, on its left is the beach of yellow sand where we landed in the zodiac. In the middle distance are small rocky Islands and in the far distance the mainland of the isle of Lewis. The sky is a blanket grey mirrored by the grey and green sea
The sky may be grey and the rain may be coming down #sideways at times but the Hebridean islands are still beautiful even when windswept

Photo of a large stack (rock) in the North Atlantic ~49km north of mainland Scotland uninhabited except by sea birds - an important breeding area for Gannets which cover the main stack and make themselves known by their noise and the smell of their guano!
In the foreground is the dark sea lapping up against seaweed covered rocks just above this the steep sides of bare rock rise up until there comes a point where the Atlantic storms fail to push the waves any further and the ledges can be covered in nesting seabirds - on this face mostly gannets
