The main church in Breda is notable for the numerous monuments and decorations it retains from Medieval and Renaissance times. The church became Protestant in the 16th century. That meant that the Medieval frescoes were covered by a layer of whitewash, which hid them from sensitive Protestant eyes, but also protected them until a restoration effort in more open-minded times brought them to light again. As a choir has no function in a Protestant church service, there was never any need to remove the renaissance rood screen and the late-gothic choir stalls. Had the church remained Catholic, all of its unique features would have been lost during subsequent Baroque, Classicist, Neo Gothic, and post-Vatican II inspired alterations of the interior.
