And another MeFi post today, this one to celebrate International De La Day. Few people have made me as happy consistently across the last three decades of my life like Posdnuos, Maseo and Trugoy the Dove (rip).

When I retire from public life to read books it’s selfish but when Montaigne does it he’s just inventing the concept of the self.

I‘ve been really enjoying this wholesome conspiracy theory, a rare joy in life, knowing that before long it will turn deeply depressing and horrific.

I made a post to MetaFilter about two recently uncovered photos of Charles Baudelaire’s long-time romantic partner, Jeanne Duval, who he wrote the “Black Venus” poem cycle about.

…or are they of her? A comment explains that there’s a dispute about who they depict.

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing ‘reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

you’re clearly in a lovecraftian tale and you will not rest until you‘ve seen it

what happens after that, only you will know, because you will not be able to communicate your experience to any human being, a species you won’t belong to anymore, not truly

That happened to a professor at an Icelandic college this winter. An article she cowrote was assessed as being not her work by an AI and the college accused her of passing it off as her own. The president of the college had to resign because of it.

Mjög áhugaverð saga þar sem forfaðir minn kemur fyrir sögu. Sýnir vel að jafnvel þegar nútímalegum lögregluaðferðum (á þeirra tíma mælikvarða) er beitt, er ekki auðvelt að leysa glæpi.

If Arsenal win the title, Raya should get the player of the season award, like Schmeichel in 1996. He’s been extraordinary.

That’s a really good comparison, though the one difference that leaps to mind is that mid-90s Serie A was the setting for a profound change in football tactics pioneered by Sacchi’s Milan, comparable to the one led by Michels‘ Ajax or Guardiola’s Barcelona. There’s been nothing like that recently.

Introduced in 2018 and expanded to all roads by 2020, Bilbao was the first European city of more than 300,000 inhabitants to adopt a universal 30 km/h speed limit. Several years on, the results suggest it has delivered broad benefits on safety, public health, travel efficiency, and quality of life.🧵
