08.01.2025 20:16 β π 2 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0The NYTβs coverage today was all about traffic, cars, drivers. It would be great to know if more people seemed to be taking the metro, train, bus, bike etc.
06.01.2025 18:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Doubles ridership, they are only adding 5% to the overall budget. What is good cutoff for free fare? 5%? 10%? That depends on how good those agencies are at finding funding. Charging fares in systems that have a low percentage is borderline performative.
05.01.2025 02:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes. For those systems where fares make up a small percentage of total budget (5-10%), itβs easier to move to a free fare model. Those transit agencies are good at non-fare funding revenue and an increase in ridership isnβt going to make much difference in there overall budget. If a 5% system β¦
05.01.2025 02:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Free transit isnβt just symbolic, especially for those who can least afford it. The βservice firstβ camp generally neglects those who can least afford to pay.
05.01.2025 01:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What evidence do you have to support this?
05.01.2025 01:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Great study on designing bikes and bikeways to make it easier for older people to ride.
Among seniors who did test rides, the most popular model was a single-seat three-wheeler. Biking even one hour a week can have signifiant benefits to health, balance, cognitive function, and overall wellbeing.
Other systems, like BART or NYCβs Metro, fares are a much higher percentage of budget, so free is much harder. Free reduces all sorts of barriers to ride, and where fares are a low percentage of budget transit should always be free. Transit is a public good. Time to treat it fully as such.
04.01.2025 19:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What is rarely considered in the free vs service argument is the percent of budget that actually comes from fares. Many transit systems (AC Transit, UTA) itβs only 5-10% at most of the budget. With any political will, this can easily be recouped by a small sales or property tax increase.
