this is tremendous. all of Patrick's usual thorough research and flair for finding the dramatic in daily life, sharpened to a razor's edge and used to excavate the fragmentary lives of real historical people.

07.12.2025 20:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0So, draw the same thing every day for a year, start small and build your comfort zone. Make stuff that your brain tells you is ugly or bad - you NEED ugly to grow. You're no longer doing this for a grade, and you don't even have to show anyone what you make if you don't want to!
07.12.2025 20:23 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I had also gotten into RGG about 7 months prior, so I chose drawing (mainly) Majima. In Feb 2021 made a Twitter account where I posted many of my drawings, and after a year I officially ended that project and allowed myself to branch out more.
07.12.2025 20:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For my topic I thought hard about what I would probably still be interested in for a whole year. I jump interests and topics a lot with ADHD, but if I'm still into something for at least 6 months I know it's the Real Deal and I'll probably be into it for a lot longer
07.12.2025 20:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0drawing The One Thing and it counted gave me a lot of emotional security.
07.12.2025 20:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's also forgiving; the goal is to just draw the thing. Not at any level of skill, not even regonizeably to another's eye. If you're not feeling practiced or confident, it's extremely forgiving. I tend to be a perfectionist and procrastinate, so knowing that I could spend as little as 30 seconds -
07.12.2025 20:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The core of this exercise is that it keeps your focus very narrow, building your comfort zone fast and getting you bored enough that you challenge yourself and experiment naturally, when you are ready to do it.
07.12.2025 19:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0To do this I made a yearlong project with a very simple goal - draw the same thing every day.
I picked up this idea from one of Struthless' videos about creativity and it's honestly. pretty fucking genius haha: www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6Ns...
After I finally figured out my identity shit and built some real emotional management tools (a good number of skills taught in DBT helped me immensely personally), COVID hit my city. Armed with a wider variety of EM tools and a lot more time, I felt it was a good time to draw regularly again.
07.12.2025 19:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0- and stunted my creative growth (because I was so focused on what other people would want, I stopped experimenting, and you can't grow without experimentation). This was exhausting and I wasn't sure how to change it! So I took a step back for a long time.
07.12.2025 19:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0One of the reasons I took a significant break from drawing was I didn't have as healthy a relationship to it - before I transitioned I was very much relying on it as a way to get approval from others, and was one of my only emotional coping tools. This led me to art that I wasn't that invested in-
07.12.2025 19:15 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0oof I feel you about art school, it can cause burnout so easily. I think that was part of my problem after graduation too
I have a bunch of suggestions and ideas that you can chew on for sure, and I'll share what I did back in 2020/2021 that sort of kick-started my drawing
In 2021 I broke out of a nearly ten-year creative hiatus.
My specialty is drawing, but I have advice on breaking out of ruts that apply to pretty much any creative work. And I'm very willing to share :)
