Sir, In 1983, a puzzled academic examining the shelves at the South Wales Minersโ€™ Library in Swansea asked why they held so many volumes of classic literature. Thirty years later, Hywel Francis and Sian Williams, writing the history of the library, used the academicโ€™s question as their bookโ€™s title, Do Miners Read Dickens? As 2025 draws to an end, Libby Purves warns us that the ignorance and snobbery evidenced in 1983 is at least as widespread now as it was then (โ€œDecline in history of art widens class divideโ€, Dec 1).

She warns of the dangers when contemporary politicians of the right and left โ€œspread the myth of high culture as elitistโ€. Chief among those dangers is a toxic widening of class division and with it a dampening of aspiration when the country needs urgently to mobilise all of its diverse talents and potential if it is to prosper in an increasingly competitive world.

So you get the LP on vinyl and a unique artwork by me in one; I've painted over the sleeve in oils to create this homage to a Paul Nash painting called Flight of the Magnolia. Plus you get an archival quality print of the image here, and I've signed the label on the disc.

Stumbled onto Threads by mistake through Instagram, and see yet more middle aged, white male photographers are telling everyone what to think about photography. It's so boring. It's one of the reasons I try and have nothing to do with 'photography'
