Because, yes, I might have been more loud and “woke” than you would have liked, but you never imagined the cruelty you voted for would kill me. When the TikTok of my demise goes viral, will you weep with righteous rage at the injustice? Because no matter what the TV says, you know I wasn’t a terrorist. I was your granddaughter, niece, cousin, neighbor. Will you speak up then to say, “But she was different”? Because I’m not different. Not more innocent, not more human. But this time, you will care because this life once breathed in proximity to yours. I’m not different. Except that—by geography and happenstance—I am alive. For now.

This is the last thing I will ever have to say to my grandmother, uncles, and cousins.
