A male Sharp-tailed Grouse, strutting in short, dried grasses. The grouse is standing, body parallel to the ground, with its tail feathers sticking straight up. The grouse is brown and tan overall, with patterning throughout. The belly is a buff tan with a few dark brown markings. The breast is heavily patterned with v-shaped brown feathers. This patterning continues over the shoulders, onto the back. The wings are brown, with rows of white, somewhat circular markings that run in rows along the wings. The tail is a creamy white. Longer central tail feathers stand above the shorter white feathers. These tail feathers have dark brown markings. The bird's air sac is a vibrant purple colored patch of skin on the sides of the throat. Over the bird's eyes are bright yellow combs, like eyebrows.

In just a few months, Sharp-tailed Grouse males will be gathering on their traditional dancing grounds, called leks, in hopes of attracting a mate.
