EQUIPSEA was funded by The British Academy and co-developed by @ox.ac.uk, @glasgow.ac.uk, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Oxford University Clinical Research Unit OUCRU in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Behind every research breakthrough are people managing grants, budgets, and partnerships. Yet across Southeast Asia, these professionals rarely get formal training.

In Feb 2026, #EQUIPSEA brought together 75 #ResearchManagement professionals for the region's first programme designed for them.

Through his work on malaria, Nick helped shape global treatment policy and contributed to saving millions of lives. To many at OUCRU and across the globe, Nick was not only an outstanding scientist, but also a mentor and trusted friend.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Sir Nicholas John White.

Nick was there at the beginning of OUCRU in Vietnam in 1991, helping build one of the country’s first malaria research labs. That early work laid the foundations for what OUCRU has become today.

This year marks 35 years of OUCRU in Vietnam (1991–2026) and 35 years partnering with HTD, Ho Chi Minh City. Together we embed rigorous research in care, generating evidence to improve patient outcomes and strengthen outbreak readiness.

With new support from LifeArc, OUCRU and Imperial College London are continuing to refine these technologies to make dengue monitoring safer, earlier, and more practical for real-world clinical care.

💡 When researchers analysed PPG signals, a light-based method that measures changes in blood volume, a Transformer model combining PPG and clinical data can 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 ~𝟴𝟬% 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆

💡 Early findings show that stroke volume can predict severe progression hours before blood pressure drops. The bioimpedance with two sensors placed on the wrist and ankle can deliver accuracy comparable to ultrasound.

Vietnam remains a dengue hotspot, with over 110,000 cases and 23 deaths recorded in 2025. At the Dengue Summit 2025, Dr Chanh Ho, Head of Dengue Research Group at OUCRU, shared updates from ongoing trials of non-invasive, AI-powered wearables for dengue care.

His dedicated service has contributed to enhancing the standing of Viet Nam’s healthcare sector, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, on the global medical map.

Prof Thwaites will conclude his term as Director of OUCRU on 1 January 2026.

A world-leading expert in infectious diseases, Prof Thwaites serves as an advisor to the @who.int, governments of Australia & the UK.

Over 13 years as Director of OUCRU, he has translated research into practical impact, strengthening the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
