Sanshiro wasn't the only show from that time that dabbed into experimental gekimation and use of photography, of course (Nekome Kozou is another good example), but it is definitely the most memorable and visually striking of them, due to how seamlessly it combines all its techniques.

Tatsunoko is well known for being one of the most ambitious and experimental anime studios since its very conception, and Sanshiro is perhaps the best example of that. An already exciting adventure/revenge story turned into something akin to a astonishing work of art, very much ahead of its time

I've just started watching Kurenai Sanshiro, and I'm already a big fan of how spectacularly it blends traditional animation, gekimation, and live-action techniques to create one of the most unique looking anime I've seen. I especially appreciate how good it is at depicting three-dimensional depth.

I've built quite a lot of plamo this year, huh

PLAMAX is also absolutely huge and based more closely on Obari's drawings from the OP he solo animated, which makes it much cooler in my book.

And while the shield requires waterslide decals or paniting for 100% color accuracy it more than makes up for it by being a sturdy, much more poseable construction rather than a hollow plastic piece, which also allows you to store the knifes inside of it.

The overall build is also more detailed than the HG. The head for example, consists of many more components. I especially love the translucent part for the eyes, which you slot under the black masking part, which really makes them pop out compared to a basic sticker in HG, esp. with some paint job.

22.12.2025 12:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I haven't built the HG so I can only compare them based on some reviews I've seen. PLAMAX lacks the inner frame and as mentioned the wings aren't foldable and rely on partsforming, but it is much, much more detailed, sturdy and poseable thanks to the ratchet joints and the included base.

Hattori Kenji comes back as the animation director for this episode, and tbh, he is quickly becoming one of my favorite ADs in Srungle. I especially like the noticeable upgrade in the hair volume, as well as some nice details on close-ups.

Also, despite its overall serious tone, this episode features some of the goofiest moments for Jet so far. I laughed out loud when he tried to jump back to his feet in a cool way, only to immediately lose his balance and fall back on his ass again.

Someone has just restored "Daicon 3" from a rare 8mm copy.
It's the best version to date.

Bundle is the best. All the villains are super silly and its amusing to observe their antics, but Bundle really steals the show.

Here he is, together with all the other Fafners in my collection. It's kinda funny to see how huge the new Moderoids are compared to the old Robot Damashii figures.

Bonus photo with a sculpture of the lantern from Tatsumiya Island, which I bought at Wonder Festival this summer.

Mark Dreizehn assembled.
Similar to Moderoid Mark Nicht I built a few years ago, it manages to perfectly capture the quirkiness of Fafner designs, while also being a much more solid figure overall. It also comes with a huge sheet of optional waterslide decals for markings to add even more detail.

It also plays around with some surprisingly clever scene transitions, further enhancing the experience. Incense smoke morphing into prison bars that keep Marco detained after he gets put to sleep and abducted is especially notable.

The entire episode has a very surreal, oneiric feel to it, especially noticeable in the purple dyed scenes. Very fitting, considering how feverish and nightmarish the entire ordeal is for Marco.

Marco Polo no Bouken #10

Marco gets abducted by a cult of assassins and has to escape before they turn him into one of them. One of two episodes directed by Moribi Murano, deserving of praise for bold use of contrasting colors and silhouettes, as well as very good framing & control of space.

Also he is absolutely gigantic! Here he is next to Moderoid Burn Bravern, Saint Cloth Myth EX: Pegasus Seiya God Cloth, HG 1/144 God Gundam and figma Yuuka Hayase for some comparison

I kinda wish his backpack was fully transformable, instead of using partsforming for opened/closed wings and engines, but its basically my only complaint.

PLAMAX Dragonar completed!

Super fun to build (maybe barring applying huge ass decals on the shield) and solid kit. He is also an absolute joy to pose and despite his size and weight can easily hold any pose, thanks to ratchet joints and included base, reinforced by screws.

Ep8 of Nadja was entrusted to the legendary Shigeyasu Yamauchi.

Yeah, this is maybe one of the coolest things I've seen in awhile.

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing a lot of his work. He strikes me as a man who loves to try new ideas and use the strengths of animation to its fullest.

The opening sequence to this episode is absolutely insane. Incredibly oneiric and rich in visual symbolism, it sets up the entire episode's story in little over a minute.
I also love how it frames the retrospection as if it were an old recording projected onto a wall. Absolute masterpiece.
