On February 10, Canada suffered one of the worst mass shootings in its history when eight people were killed in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, including five students and a teacher at a secondary school. After the shooting, OpenAI reached out to authorities to provide information about the shooter’s use of ChatGPT and announced it had banned the shooter’s account months earlier.

However, what OpenAI didn’t say, but the Wall Street Journal discovered, was that employees pushed for the company to reach out to Canadian authorities to alert them to what the person who would later take eight people’s lives was inputing to ChatGPT. The user was flagged through an automated system for suggesting scenarios to the chatbot involving gun violence. β€œInternally, about a dozen staffers debated whether to take action on [the user’s] posts,” wrote the Journal. β€œSome employees interpreted [the user’s] writings as an indication of potential real-world violence.”

Altman’s comments were bad enough. But the following day to read about how OpenAI had neglected its duty when it banned a user in Canada who was using ChatGPT to play out gun violence scenarios put his comments in an even worse light.

I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

A tariff β€œrefund” mostly goes to whoever wrote the tariff check: the importer of record. That’s not the same person who paid more at the register. So refunds -- if they're offered -- might sound like consumer relief, but in reality, they're corporate windfalls.

Turns Out There Was Voter Fraud in Georgiaβ€”by Elon Musk The state board of elections found Musk’s PAC sent prefilled ballot applications.

The story that Elon Musk committed voter fraud has gotten next to no coverage -- one of those things you can't make come up on a Google search.

But I think it's time for Dems to go on offensive abt right wing coddling of this immigrant interfering in our elections.

ICE drawdown may be too late for small businesses like El Sazon Operation Metro Surge kept many people of Latino and East African descent home, afraid to go to work or out to shops and restaurants. This caused a drastic drop in revenue for small businesses, which are now seeking aid.

Cristian and Karen DeLeon are out of money and ready to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for their five El Sazon restaurants unless aid and customers arrive soon.

Many Twin Cities small businesses are in the same boat after the ICE surge.

β€˜Residential protesting’ could be a crime in Minnesota under new GOP proposal A bill that’s backed by a coalition of GOP lawmakers set to be proposed at the start of the upcoming session would make β€œresidential protesting" punishable under Minnesota law.

Two dozen GOP lawmakers in Minnesota want to make "residential protesting" against the law. I hope, after all Minnesotans have been through fighting off federal government brutality, that these GOP lawmakers are out of a job at the next election.

Los Angeles Police Department Encourages School
Attendance Amid Recent Downtown Activity
Los Angeles: In light of recent activity in the downtown area, the Los Angeles Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and students of the importance of staying in school.
School attendance is mandatory in the City of Los Angeles and there may be legal consequences for parents and students for:
β€’ Day time Curfew violations - It is unlawful for any minors under 18 to be in public places, streets, or amusement spots during school hours (typically 8:30 am
to 1:30 pm. The only exception includes being with a parent, authorized school activities, or emergencies.
β€’ California Education Code violations:
β€’ Mandates that all children between the ages of six and eighteen, unless exempted, must attend a full-time public day school for the full designated school day.
β€’ Middle and high school students are legally permitted one excused absence per calendar year to participate in a "civic or political event," provided advance school notification (emphasis added).
β€’ Additionally, Los Angeles Unified School District policy states that three or more unexcused absences or tardies of 30 minutes or more, can trigger a School Attendance Review Board (SARB) intervention for disciplinary action.
Parents and students are also reminded that presence at school promotes intellectual growth. It becomes more difficult to fill knowledge gaps with student absences. Attendance builds good habits and healthy routines; and provides structure and stability. Lastly, school attendance also increases student safety, which includes safety resources provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
