An acrylic painting inspired by the story of Beren and Luthien, from The Silmarillion. Beren and Luthien steal a Silmaril - shown here as a giant glowing gem. Luthien distracts Morgoth with her magical cloak. Morgoth towers at the back of the image, where we see the firey yet dark halls of Angband. Luthien and Beren are in the foreground, as if trying to run out of frame. Flowing textiles dominate the composition, going from Luthien to both Beren as protection and towards Morgoth as a distraction.

One of my favorite paintings: This scene inspired by Tolkien's Silmarillion, of Luthien and Beren stealing a Silmaril from Morgoth.

Painted during a wonderful mentorship with Cynthia Sheppard, I learned so much about composition, references (those textiles...) and value control.

The existential uh-ohs can’t catch you if you’re flat I am extremely tired today, like the fully wrung-out, lay flat tired. I had jury duty today, and the process was A Lot. The whole month has been a lot. I have a new book coming out tomorrow, but book releases have always been quiet affairs for me. I am most excited about my stories while I'm actually writing them, living in them, when everything feels white-hot and vital.

Presenting a book to an audience feels more like showing off a piece of beach glass. Beautiful and worthy, but evidence of where the lightning struck rather than the lightning itself. I hope that doesn't sound full of myself.
