Yeah, luckily there are times where I am able to figure out what to say, But when it comes to verbal responses I actually also make the same mistake of saying the same thing

"I hope things get better for you"

"I'm so sorry that happened to you"

Because I don't know what else to say

There's also sometimes nothing you can do in response to certain problems, aside from showing support. You can't magically cure illness, bring back the dead, or make a friend's family member/boss/SO less abusive. I wish I could hug my friends irl, but they all live thousands of miles away.
