James Doohan as Scotty on the original Star Trek, with an exaggeratedly skeptical expression on his face. Captioned: "why are you so sick ae other cunt's genders as if it's any yer actual business? sittin up at night pure foamin at the mouth hinkin aboot other folk's genitals like a fuckin weirdo"

A colour sketch of a man's head modelled off actor Michael Shanks during his time playing Daniel Jackson in stargate SG-1.

The sketch features spectacles, brown hair, blue eyes and a slight frown.

So, I got so giddy about the shading style I'd discovered for myself that I just had to try it out on a recognisable face.

So, here's an attempt at a stern looking Daniel Jackson from, of course, Stargate SG-1.

I'm not delighted with his hair, but you know what? I'm chuffed with the rest of this.

A sketch of a Caucasian male face, with red hair, green eyes, and ambient shaded features. He has a neck but no body because I'm still learning how to draw shoulders.

3/4 angle faces are hard, y'all. So, I scurried back to my comfort zone; heads from the front.

I decided to stretch a little though, by working on figuring out a system for shading. 17 million layers later, this is what I landed on.

Messy, but I'm delighted.
Progress!

I think the thing that frustrates me most about learning to draw is that since I take to most creative pursuits with ease, because I have excellent motor memory, drawing is a struggle since it's so much more internal.

But the challenge is part of the reason I'm doing this, so I'm embracing it.

This is such great advice, thank you!

I hadn't considered the idea that touching something would help, but I can see how it would. I can't remember the look of a thing, but the feel of it will be clear.

Let's just remind ourselves where I started a few weeks ago. 🤣

A sketch of everyone's favourite Vulcan, Spock. He's speaking, while surrounded in a plain grey frame so that only his head, shoulders, and chest are visible because I had trouble with his arms and gave up.

I'm a complete aphant, I've never drawn in my life because I was certain I couldn't, and I've decided to challenge that belief by teaching myself step by tiny step.

I've been working on facial proportions, and have decided - for the first time - to add a talking mouth.

Phew!

I have total aphantasia, and for my entire life, I have been unable to draw more than a (wonky) stick figure.

I've created this account so I can journal my progress as I work to improve my drawing skills, one by one.
