The critical research that unlocks our climate's past and future may be on thin ice “There’s questions that we don’t know we should be asking yet.”

See interviews from lab alum Ben Riddell-Young and PI Ed Brook in this Mother Jones article on the future of ice core research.

Inside the Race to Find Earth's Oldest Ice A global race is on to drill for the oldest known layers of Antarctic ice so researchers can peer back in time to a warmer climate to better understand the planet’s hotter future

The NSF COLDEX ice coring team is set up for another field season in the Allan Hills, a windswept region of eastern Antarctica where scientists have found 6-million-year-old ice. Locked inside are the secrets to understanding our ancient climate. I covered COLDEX last year for @sciam.bsky.social:

Huntington man braves Antarctica to research how ancient ice reveals Earth's climate history Jacob Chalif is part of a three-month mission with COLDEX — the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration — searching to record the Earth's climate history through ancient ice.

I interviewed a scientist in Antarctica this week, as one does.

The COLDEX project is looking for the world’s oldest ice and the history of climate change.

"When I think about Antarctica, it’s all about sea level rise, and Western Antarctica is the heart of the beast and the crux of our problem.”
