Matt Chorley - Feeling the Burn-ham - BBC Sounds Labour MPs tell Matt what they think about Andy Burnham. Plus the politics of canals.

Listen to Robbie Cumming and John Sergeant discussing the politics of canals with Matt Chorley on BBC Radio 5 yesterday.

Good points about both the value of canals and the threat to them from inadequate funding.

Scottish Budget 2026 to 2027 The Scottish Budget sets out the Scottish Government's proposed spending and tax plans for 2026-27, as presented to the Scottish Parliament

Excellent to see the Scottish Government increasing investment in Scottish Canals to ensure their canals remain a valuable resource for biodiversity, active living and tourism.

There's a lesson here for England and Wales.

Last week's #FundBritainsWaterways campaign cruise by the Wilderness Boat Owners' Association failed to reach Brandon Lock on the Little Ouse, owing to silt & fallen trees.

The town of Brandon is now virtually cut off from the national and local system of navigable waterways.

Ah. It’s so difficult to get people to understand even the basics of the situation.

Yes, sorry about paywall. Argument is that NT is suffering from declining visitor numbers after Covid and two wet summers, plus declining membership (bit of a rant about ‘woke initiatives’) and increased employment costs. But of the three it’s still in by far the best situation.
