Two weeks later, Epstein continued to reject the government’s offer and sought a meeting with Acosta, according to the documents in Epstein’s inbox. Villafaña then issued target letters to three of Epstein’s assistants informing them that their boss was now under investigation for money laundering and other financial crimes. She also dispatched agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the homes of two of his secretaries. Finally, on Sept. 24, 2007, one day before Villafaña said she was prepared to indict him, Epstein signed the non-prosecution agreement.

Last month, Acosta told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that he didn’t recall any discussion of “potential financial crimes” as part of his office’s Epstein investigation. Yet the emails and documents from Epstein’s Yahoo account show that prosecutors in his office discussed the financial-crimes component of the investigation with Acosta and copied him on correspondence about it. Records obtained as part of the money laundering probe were stored at the US Attorney’s Office in a folder titled, “Money Laundering,” which contains “attorney research and handwritten notes,” according to a partial list of the government’s evidence that was filed in a related court proceeding.

In a huge coincidence, this Acosta fellow—the US Attorney who raced to protect Jeffrey Epstein from his own office investigating Epstein's finances—was later appointed to Trump's Cabinet.

After bringing white South Africans to the United States as refugees earlier this year, the Trump administration has now granted protection to members of far-right European parties.

This plan, which becomes official today, makes the country's refugee program into a tool for white nationalism.

Outside Chicago, a father of seven was too embarrassed to tell his family last Christmas that they might lose their home to foreclosure. A debt collector was demanding he pay almost $30,000 to settle a $10,000 second mortgage he said he hadn’t heard about in 15 years. Another homeowner, near San Francisco, faced foreclosure this year over a $121,000 second mortgage — even though he’d received a tax document from his lender in 2009 showing the debt had been canceled. And in suburban Washington, DC, a couple got a demand for more than $86,000 in back interest on a loan for which they hadn’t received any monthly statements in nearly a decade, despite laws that preclude any such interest charges during periods when regular statements weren’t sent.

This is a tangible example of how regulatory agencies matter to people in practical ways. The CFPB had been investigating and blocking these abuses of the law, until Russ Vought and Trump stopped them from doing so.
