Out now! πŸŒΏπŸŽ™οΈ In this month's episode of #InsideBiodiversity, Prof Marten Scheffer explains critical transitions and tipping points.

Together with iDiv's Dr Volker Hahn, he explores whether local tipping points can be scaled up to a 🌍 biospheric planetary boundary.

some stuff about graphics formats

I found these notes from #BenBolker about file formats for plots and diagrams to be pretty useful. Your mileage may vary.

A challenge in epidemic forecasting is that ML models overfit while mechanistic models miss changing transmission conditions. Our new JR Soc Interface paper tests whether physics-informed neural networksβ€”which embed an epidemiological ODE system inside a neural netβ€”can address this.

I’m working on a manuscript that mentions a fair number of standard distributions and their properties, and I’ve been wondering if there’s an equally standard reference. For context for my question, while Wikipedia often has what I need if I want to appeal to some function and its properties, the Digital Library of Mathematical Functions (https://dlmf.nist.gov/) provides a peer-reviewed standard alternative. Is there someplace similar where I could point for properties of a Gumbel, Dirichlet-multinomial distribution, etc.

A colleague is looking for an open-source/online (pref. peer-reviewed) reference for properties of probability distributions. Any ideas? (NIST gives *very* basic properties e.g. www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handb... but I think they're looking for something more complete ...)

Ecology, Evolution and Behavior The Ecology, Evolution and Behavior graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin is top-10 ranked.

Like math and plant community ecology?

I am recruiting one or two new Ph.D. students to work on theory and its integration with data in the areas of forest dynamics, species coexistence, or plant community ecology more generally.

Deadlines for the EEB and Plant Biology programs are Dec. 1.
