Took my kid to urgent care this morning and was asked for permission to use an “AI scribe.” I’ve declined multiple times for myself because, as a data scientist (and, like, a person observing the political economy of AI), I have grave concerns. Today I relented, and not for lack of concern 🧵 1/

Hot take: The doctor shouldn't be the one asking if it's ok if she uses AI to take patient notes. The power differential + patient anxiety + short appointment times means the patient feels pressure to say yes. It should be a question asked during check-in. (I wish it wasn't used at all, but...)

LLM responses which do not reflect consensus reality & facts are produced via the Same Process which generate responses which *Do* broadly conform to consensus reality & facts.

As a person who is famously (infamously?) bad with names, one thing I miss about Olde Twitter was that I knew how to track down so many brilliant researchers by scrolling through my following list. A lot of folks never made it over to BlueSky and it’s a sad loss.

It’s so strange to me that “golden age” sci-fi somehow got labeled as such. The standard of writing—and expectations from readers—is so much higher now. If I had to label one era or the other as the “golden age,” of science fiction, I’d pick today, hands down!
