Why We Should Not Characterize Aging as a Disease | Philosophy of Medicine

(P.S. This essay is a more accessible extension of my academic article, 'Why We Shouldn’t Characterize Aging as a Disease.' Do consider giving it a read if interested in a more detailed discussion!)

I think #geroscience/ #biogerontology can become a powerful force against #ageism. But it’ll need to be done in ways that don't foster harmful attitudes towards older adults.

#Geroscience/ #biogerontolgy holds a lot of promise when it comes to combatting serious, chronic diseases that tend to hurt us when we’re older. But excessive medicalisation of aging puts our well-being at risk, which actually runs counter to the aims of the biomedical research.

There’s very good evidence that classifying aging as a disease would exacerbate #ageism, worsening both discrimination and prejudice against older adults.

[2] The argument here is that, regardless of how we think about the biology of aging (a very controversial topic!), our generally shared ethical norms should keep us from classifying it as a disease.

Very happy to share that my essay on why we shouldn't classify #aging as a disease was published in the @ca.theconversation.com earlier today!

The essay is a response to a small but vocal group of researchers in #geroscience/#biogerontology who've long pushed for the classification.

There will be some high profile moves and maybe a few others.

But universities globally are facing a bunch of pressures that mean they can’t just go on hiring sprees. Plus, the US science infrastructure is outsized. It’s not like there is a capacity to absorb all that.

Blagosklonny helped introduce a much-needed shift in how we think about ageing. This looks like a great summary/introduction to his work. Thanks @agingdoc.bsky.social for sharing!

Thanks for sharing! This looks like a great introduction to his work. He was an incredibly productive researcher—a summary like this should really help people get a handle on his most important contributions. I appreciate it!

One of the most inspiring figures in biogerontology/geroscience.

Campisi, Hayflick, Blagosklonny—the field has lost a lot of incredible scientists in 2024. But they've left us with many invaluable lessons about aging and how to study it.
